NFL Expects To Finish With Over 1 Million Fans In Attendance For Games This Season

Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NFL teams have either had extremely limited or no fans in attendance at all this season.

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the league announced in a Wednesday conference call that they expect to have reached over one million total spectators by the end of the regular season.

The regular season concludes this Sunday, with the postseason beginning on the Jan. 9-10 weekend.

In the conference call, the league stated that there have been 102 regular season games with some fans in attendance.

According to ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys had 219,021 total fans in attendance for their eight home games at AT&T Stadium in 2020 (an average of 27,377 per game). The Jacksonville Jaguars have the second highest attendance on the year with 127,355 for their 2020 home games.

Per ESPN, 18 of the 32 teams have had a number of fans at their 2020 home games. The Buffalo Bills are among the 14 clubs that haven't had any spectators, but they received approval to welcome up to 6,700 for their first playoff game.

Many clubs took the wait-and-see approach before the start of the year. The Las Vegas Raiders announced before the regular season that they wouldn't have any fans for the 2020 season.

Aside from the Bills and Raiders, the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets and Detroit Lions also haven't had any fans at their respective 2020 home games.

The league is still planning to have a limited capacity for Super Bowl LIV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida on Feb. 7. They have yet to announce the maximum capacity allowed for that game.

Many had doubts that the NFL would manage to finish the 2020 regular season on time amid the pandemic, but they're on the verge of doing just that.
