Nick Caserio's Contract With Houston Texans Is Reportedly Worth $30 Million

The Houston Texans hired Nick Caserio as their new general manager earlier this week, and he's already among the league's highest paid at the position.

Citing sources, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that Caserio's deal will pay him $30 million over six years. The contract reportedly carries a maximum value of $36 million.

The Texans attempted to hire Caserio in the 2019 offseason, following the surprise firing of GM Brian Gaine, who was reportedly involved in a power struggle with then-head coach Bill O'Brien. The Texans handed O'Brien the GM responsibilities after failing to hire Caserio.

Caserio worked in the New England Patriots organization from 2001 up until this year. He became the director of player personnel in 2008, holding onto that role for the next 12 years.

He was part of all six Patriots Super Bowl championship teams. The franchise advanced to the big game nine times during Caserio's tenure.

Several NFL teams have fired former Patriots scouts, executives and assistant coaches, having learned under the great Bill Belichick. The results have been far more bad than good, although former defensive coach Brian Flores has flourished as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

O'Brien was previously an offensive coach for the Patriots (earning a promotion to offensive coordinator in 2011), but he was unable to replicate the success of his former leader in Foxborough. O'Brien was fired following an 0-4 start to the 2020 season.

Caserio has a difficult situation to work around. For starters, he'll have to find the franchise's next head coach; defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel finished the 2020 campaign as the interim head coach.

He will also have to fix a 4-12 team that doesn't have a 2021 first round pick. The No. 3 selection went to the Miami Dolphins as part of the Laremy Tunsil blockbuster trade that took place ahead of the 2019 season.
