Wonder Woman 1984 Passes $118 Million At The Box Office
Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot, has reportedly passed $118 million in the worldwide box office. Per Deadline, Warner Bros. announced the numbers for the 2020 film, disclosing an additional $5.5 million was made in North America over the course of the weekend. This marks a 67 percent drop compared to its first weekend numbers, though.
The movie has made $28.5 million in the United States and Canada, with Deadline claiming the fact that people have realized they could stay in and stream from HBO Max is responsible for the drop in revenue. Wonder Woman 1984 is indeed available via HBO Max and it makes less sense to go to the theater and buy tickets for an entire family if you're a subscriber. The outlet also attributes the drop to CinemaScore's B+ rating.
Of course, this is just how the box office results work, films typically garner more ticket sales upon release so a drop was expected. Also, 60 percent of cinemas in the United States remain closed as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The ones which are open are scaled down to some degree.
Having the film also go out on HBO Max was a neat touch amid such perilous times. However, Warner Bros. hasn't released figures as it pertains to streaming.
Analysts have told Deadline the film could make $40 million in the U.S and Canada altogether.
Despite the criticism, WW1984 has seen measurable success on a worldwide scale, prompting Warner Bros. to turn their attention to the third installment of the trilogy. Gadot will reprise her role as the female superhero in the next fil.
The movie was the first by Warner Bros. that released both in theaters and on HBO Max and could be considered an opener to the floodgates, with all of the company's films slated for this year to be available via stream as well.
