9 Love is in the Bin, 2006, $1.4 million

Originally titled "Girl With Balloon", when this iconic piece was sold at auction, Banksy had one more prank to pull on the art world. Banksy had installed an automatic paper shredder into the frame. Just as the gavel was smashed, the painting self-destructed, shredding into several dozen strips. Even though the contraption malfunctioned halfway through, the iconic image made headlines and purportedly increased the value beyond its initial selling price of $1.4 million. The piece was later put on display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street gallery.

8 Girl with Balloon & Morons Sepia, 2007 $1.7 million

Her good deed was rewarded in proper Banksy fashion by a surprise promise from the anonymous purchaser who offered to lend the work to the museum for an additional year.
