6 Facts On Bryan Cranston's $5 Million Custom Beach House

Bryan Cranston’s unique custom beach house was custom built from the ground up to reflect the Breaking Bad Star’s values– protecting the planet.

“I’ve been a proponent of environmental issues and recycling for a long, long time,” he said about the project, “and what I really wanted to do was to be able to show people around the world how you can live wonderfully and yet be friendly to the environment.

This incredible house is now on the market for $5 million. Here are some fascinating facts Bryan Cranston has shared about the beach house:

6 The Property Wasn’t Always So Modern

While the property was always beautiful – directly on the Pacific Ocean – there wasn’t always a modern, luxurious, eco-friendly beach house there.

When Bryan Cranston and his wife bought the land in 2007, the only house on the property was a single-story house built in the 1940s. It was used by the US Army to train troops. Bryan Cranston and his wife affectionately referred to it as the “love shack,” but it had numerous issues, including the lack of a proper foundation. The house was built directly on sand.

The actor determined that a new beach house needed to be built on the property for the getaway he and his wife were looking for, and took it as an opportunity to unleash his creativity.

In order to start his eco-friendly house off right, Cranston invited Habitat for Humanity and even his neighbors to take anything they wanted from the old house before it was demolished.

“We diminish the amount of things that are going to go to the waste dump,” Cranston explained. “That’s a very green aspect to this.”

5 Cranston Designed The Beach House Himself

With the help of friend and designer John Turturro, Cranston came up with plans for the unique beach house: glass walls, lots of outdoor patio space, a balcony looking out over the beach from the upper floor, and tall windows that would show off the stunning views of the ocean.

The house is two floors tall and 2,4050 square feet. It has three bedrooms, four bathrooms. It even includes a custom furniture and art collection (which can be purchased along with the beach house for an additional sum.)

4 It Has A Net-Zero Carbon Footprint

Cranston wanted to show the world that it wasn’t necessary to compromise when building a green home – it is possible to live your values and have a beautiful place to live.

This modern house is designed to produce the same amount of energy as it uses. It achieves this through state of the art solar and recycling systems.

Photovoltaic and hydronic panels installed on the roof take care of the home’s electricity and hot water needs. With insulated panels on the walls help to keep the temperature stable, the home doesn’t need AC, even in summer. The house is also built with recycled materials, and uses a rain water collection system.

Listing agent Jon Perkins described it as, “One of the most remarkable green homes ever built in California.”

The beach house received LEED platinum certification from the US Green Building Council, which is the highest possible standard for energy and sustainability in homes.

The house cost around 30% more due to the cost of these premium eco-friendly projects (though Cranston noted that green housing is now more readily-available, and home owners may be able to add these features at lower costs).

3 The House Was Nicknamed “Three Palms”

There were three Mexican Fan Palms standing on the property when the couple purchased it. In homage to these trees, the house was nicknamed “Three Palms.” This nickname really sealed Cranston's attachment to his beach home, and he probably feels like he's in a resort with that name. Given the gorgeous views, it's probably true that he feels this way.

2 It Has Doubled In Value

Bryan Cranston purchased the oceanfront lot with his wife in 2007 for $2.5 million. Now it is on the market for $5 million. With such gorgeous views, all the customization, and the lean towards greener living, it's not a surprise that the house has doubled in value. On top of this, any Breaking Bad fan would love the chance to purchase the house of their favorite protagonist. The show has been so intoxicatingly addictive that Cranston can for sure capitalize on this fanbase if he wishes to sell his house for more.

1 Cranston Is Selling

The home was finished in 2013, the same year Cranston finished filming the final season of Breaking Bad. Eight years later, the popular leading man is traveling too much for his many acting roles and his mescal company Dos Hombres – which he owns with Breaking Bad costar Aaron Paul – to spend as much time there as he would like to. After debating for some time, the star has decided to put this unique property on the market.

Cranston has said that even though it was a hard choice to sell the house he worked so hard on that he is ready to pass it on to someone else.

“I hope a family buys it so that their kids and grandkids all come to visit, and they can jump in the ocean and learn how to swim or surf and go for walks on the beach- look at the dolphins that come by almost every morning and afternoon,” he said, “and end the day, on the deck, share a glass of wine with friends as you watch the sun set into the horizon.”
