Hong Kong Affordable Ferry Turns Into A Luxury Yacht
Once dubbed as one of Hong Kong's most affordable attractions, one of The Star Ferry boats has now been turned into a luxury yacht. The yacht is now for sale, and at a mere $2.7 million, it can be yours.
The Star Ferry has been linked as one of Hong Kong's most iconic and affordable attractions and at 120 years old, it's the oldest form of public transit. The ferry offers glamorous, unobstructed panoramic views of the Hong Kong skyline. For less than $5 a ride, passengers can be transported between Hong Kong island and the bustling Kowloon district.
Director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, Richard Welsey, is proud of The Star Ferry. "It's an experience comparable to the Eiffel Tower, or the Sydney Harbour Bridge," he stated, according to CNN Travel.
In 2011, one of the ferry boats was sold when one of the city's cross-harbor ferry lines was discontinued amid the expansion of the MTR subway. The man who bought the boat created a floating mansion. According to KCTV5, the yacht is a staggering 6,000 square feet of living space, which includes four staterooms, offices, an on-board movie theater, a formal dining room, rooftop spots for sunbathing, and a living room that is reportedly home to Hong Kong's single biggest sofa.
The yacht is known as the DOT and is fully self-sufficient with solar panels on top and harnesses wastewater. DOT is priced at a cool $21 million, with its exterior painted all white to gleam off of Hong Kong's turquoise waters.
Star Ferry began its first service across Victoria Harbour in 1888. Depending on the water conditions, the expedition took between 40 and 60 minutes where now, it takes mere minutes. Travelers on the Star Ferry can enjoy luscious views of the bustling city and if you're lucky, catch a peek at a gorgeous sunset. As reported by CNN News, there are two remaining routes -- between Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) at the southern tip of Kowloon and Central Piers on Hong Kong Island, and between TST and Wan Chai.
Every boat on the Star Ferry has the word "Star" in its name. Although the ferry lost its "star", it didn't lose service. Home to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and its Zaha Hadid-designed flagship building, which is located in the southern Kowloon neighborhood, has local ferries. The local ferries connect the working-class North Point neighborhood and will soon have another connecting it to Central.
