Most people would never imagine seeing a massive luxury yacht smash into a dock, yet that's precisely what happened at Simpson Bay in Sint Maarten. The luxury yacht in question is deemed to be worth a jaw-dropping $90 million and comes equipped with amenities that would far exceed the average person's expectations. This yacht, called the Go, is part of Turquoise Yachts, and crashed not once, but twice into the dock, resulting in significant damage. This incident has put the focus on safety controls and casts shadows of doubt on the automatically piloted features of this, and all other vessels.
The Daily Herald has confirmed that a computer malfunction is being blamed for this expensive crash, in which thankfully, nobody was harmed or injured. However, the estimated damages are high, and questions continue to swirl over how such a high-tech vessel could malfunction in such a dangerous way.
Nobody expected to see a luxury yacht lose control and helplessly steer right into a wooden dock. In fact, most would assume that a high-end vessel of this nature would come fully loaded with the best of everything, including the most advanced technology features that money can buy.
To put things in perspective, this vessel is a massive 251 feet long and Auto Evolution declares that it is "powered by 2 Caterpillar 2,575 hp diesel engines and boasts a top speed of 18 knots, with a range of 5,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots." There's undoubtedly a big investment that went into the safety features and on-board technology features that were installed in this luxury vessel.
Sparing no expense in its design, the amenities found within the massive luxury yacht elevates Go to a whole new level. They include a steam room and gym, a jacuzzi and large pool a helipad and tender garage, a private cinema and of course, an entire beach club. The ship is large enough to accommodate 16 guests and 19 crew members for the ultimate in water experience.
By all accounts, the vessel would have come equipped with all the required safety measures one would expect, along with many perks and upgraded additional features as well, yet it sadly lost all steering power.
This incident is one of many which shines a light on the reliability of technology. This is especially true when it comes to putting so much trust in a computer which is then meant to somehow assess and dictate danger levels. Clearly a situation such as this one could have ended quite differently, as questions swirl surrounding what could have been done to prevent this from occurring in the first place, and what sorts of safety and security measures can be implemented to ensure it doesn't happen again.
