Roblox Goes Public: Next Steps For Gaming's Emerging Empire

Roblox going public could mean more than simply increasing revenue streams. Today, 10th March, 2021, marks the first day the virtual reality children’s gaming empire Roblox going public. With shares starting at a reference point of $45 per unit, the popular gaming platform opted for a direct listing as an unpopular alternative to the traditional initial public offering or IPO. According to Nasdaq, the California-based Roblox was valued at $30 billion dollars per the NYSE.

While children across the country are getting most familiar to home schooling and virtual learning environments due to the global affects of COVID-19, the forecasting of cyber expert reports in Forbes, indicate the company’s ever-growing  responsibility to implement safety measures that will ban users for inappropriate conduct and baiting minor children in unsupervised chats.

Despite security concerns, the mega gaming platform has reported that their demographics includes three quarters of all U.S. children aged 9 to 12. Compelled not by leading edge graphics but by the simplicity of the technology and the worlds within worlds they build from scratch (and dollars for paid features), users are literally drawing themselves into the game or their own virtual reality.

Baszucki’s ultimate vision is to shepherd in the “metaverse” of science-fiction and create a virtual reality paradise for user. Rationale appears to have no effect as Roblox makers and gamers are capable of designing a dream world ‘reality’ with no observable conclusion or goal besides continuing to create, play and recreate more within the game. Likened to the OASIS of ‘Ready Player One’, an almost ten year long user and Roblox game developer expressed in a Fortune article the game is probably going to be a real-world version soon enough.

Allowing for players to become adept and create worlds for other players to join and create, one would have to think and conceptualize exactly where the boundaries exist. A UK parent reported their children seeing depictions of acts that should not, in any case, be seen by a child. The allowance of users to create their own scenarios can lead to some troubling scenarios, to say the least.

On one hand the game has made way for super intelligent youth to actually be celebrated and earn a living from what they love. While on the other the game being targeted and poplar from minor-aged users rings horrifyingly true and regulation internally and externally is a must. The thinnest lines between ethics and scientific breakthroughs have constantly been exposed throughout history, however for now defensive resources are prescribed to protect the children gamers like StopBullying.Gov, PTA.org, Parents.com and Smartsocial.com/roblox/ for starters.

The public has much to consider when it comes to the morality and safety as financial gain could be the only clear target for Roblox’s immediate future as the estimated $30 billion dollar company’s owner and investors have taken the leap into Wall Street.
