Van Gogh Painting Unseen For 100 Years Sells For $15.4 Million

Vincent Van Gogh might have died back in 1890 but he's still very much a hot topic today and one of his masterpieces was sold just this very week!
Van Gogh's work of art, entitled "Street Scene in Monmartre" was just sold on Thursday at Sotheby's Paris for a whopping $15,400,000. Those in the fine art circle might have recently heard about Van Gogh's masterpiece coming up for sale again."Street Scene in Monmartre" was rumored to be in "private hands" which is very exciting news for an art-lover because this means that the painting was not "in residence" at a museum or public collection which almost guarantees that the painting will never be available for purchase.
Sotheby's confirmed that this was the case and in fact, the rare painting had been with the same family for more than 100 years. When the painting was put up for auction, you can just imagine how many hungry eyes were eager to get a peek at the unique piece.
"Street Scene in Monmartre" depicts a windmill (officially named the "Pepper Mill"), a brightly-lit sky, and a man, woman, and little girl walking in front of the perfectly crooked wooden palisades that guard the Pepper Mill.
According to Sotheby's, the painting was created in 1887 which was just one year after Van Gogh moved to Paris. Then, Van Gogh actually lived in Montmartre while he was living with his brother, Theo. This obviously makes the painting sentimental and very special. We can't help but wonder if this "street scene" was one that the legendary artist imagined or one that he witnessed first-hand and chose to recreate and forever memorialize because something about it stood out to him. Did he know the man, woman, and little girl depicted in the painting? If they weren't figments of his imagination, maybe he had daily interactions with these people? We can only guess while looking at photos of this masterfully painted canvas.
After "Street Scene in Monmartre" was completed, Van Gogh left Paris and headed to a southern area of France where he lived until he passed away in 1890. Being that this painting was completed so close to Van Gogh's death, it is considered by some to be a "seasoned" painting by the famous Dutch post-impressionist painter.
We don't know much about the new owner of "Street Scene in Monmartre" but whomever they are, they know own a very rich (in more ways that one) piece of world history.
