Certain celebrities have attained such a high level of notoriety that much of their private life has turned into public discourse. This includes some of the highlights of their lives including wedding ceremonies, private galas, and other celebrity-exclusive celebrations. But while these monolithic milestones are celebrated and adored, many other moments from their private lives are also revealed. This includes divorces, lawsuits, and other significant settlements.

With certain celebrity couples, some of these values are heightened because of their powerful work dynamic. Sometimes the partners star side by side in feature films where their chemistry is experienced second hand by the audience. Other times, the couple writes a love song together, with vulnerable fans tuning in. These moments causes the public to enter into the relationship with the celebrities themselves, feeling as though they are presiding over it as omniscient officiaries throughout the relationship. And when those relationships end, the public feels the emotional toll themselves, having become invested in the marriage, the creations, and their relationship. Despite the real world ramifications of their personal decisions, these celebrity couples eventually split, resulting in settlements in the millions, and in some cases, billions.

8 Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt, $100 million

This powerful couple made headlines at several different moments throughout their relationship. The public entered into the dynamic in 2004 after the release of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Pitt shortly after separated with his previous celebrity wife, Jennifer Aniston. In 2005, Brad and Angelina debuted their relationship in a W Magazine profile. The couple eventually announced their engagement in April of 2012 when Angelina Jolie was spotted wearing a $1 million engagement ring. In 2014, the couple starred in their first feature film together since their chemistry in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The film was titled By the Sea and featured a couple similar to their real-world counterparts in an ominous on-screen foreshadowing as a couple attempts to rekindle their flame at a hotel in France. In August of 2016, their relationship ended when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce. While much of the specifics regarding their split have been kept private, the amount of their lawsuit was announced at over $100 million.

7 Garth Brooks & Sandy Mahl, $125 million

After meeting in college during the mid-1980s, two Oklahoma State students started writing music together, culminating in a hit song called "I've Got a Good Thing Going". Garth Brooks and Sandy Mahl continued their relationship which resulted in several other songs, serving as one another's muse. The couple continued to collaborate, but the songs began to feature nostalgic tones of memories past like the 1990's hit "That Summer".  In 2001, the couple filed for divorce after 15 years of marriage. The decision culminated in joint custody of their three children as well as a $125 million settlement.

6 Neil Diamond & Marcia Murphey, $150 million

When Neil Diamond first met Marcia Murphey, he was still married to Jaye Posner. After a slippery divorce, Diamond married Marcia Murphey in December of 1969. The couple stayed together over the course of two children and 25 years. The couple divorced in 1995 which resulted in the reported $150 million settlement. This amount was almost equal to Diamond's entire net worth which was an estimated $175 million at the time.

5 Michael Jordan & Juanita Vanoy, $168 million

Together, the powerful couple was married for 17 years. They initially met in 1985 and married in 1989 in Las Vegas. Vanoy filed for divorce in 2002 after the Chicago Tribune published several scandalous articles about Jordan's infidelity. With assets estimated at over $398 million, the divorce resulted in a $168 million settlement as well as an additional $2.1 million in legal fees.

4 Mel Gibson & Robyn Moore, $425 million

The couple first met in the 1970's prior to Mel Gibson's successful career. They celebrated their wedding in 1980 and enjoyed several years of marriage that blossomed both of their careers in film. Mel Gibson had his breakdown in Malibu in 2006 which earned him a variety of negative press. He later established that this moment caused a downward spiral in his relationship. Robyn eventually filed for divorce in 2009 which was carried out in December of 2011. The settlement was one of the largest in Hollywood's history at over $400 million. Robyn entered headlines again in February of 2021 when she listed her $32 million Malibu mansion for sale.

3 Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren, $750 million

The divorce of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren made several headlines for its scandalous details and promiscuous affairs. It resulted in 17 extramarital affairs including with socialite Rachel Uchitel. The divorce included several stipulations including the inability for Tiger Woods to introduce his children to any future girlfriends. The divorce also resulted in a payment of over $750 million,

2 Rupert Murdoch & Anna Torv, $2 billion

Rupert Murdoch is a media mogul who is no stranger to divorce. Anna Torv was a Scottish journalist and together the couple had three children. They first met when Anna was just 18 and they stayed together for 31 years. The couple divorced in 1999 and Murdoch married Wendi Deng just weeks after the split. With a fortune valued at $7.8 billion at the time of their divorce, Torv received a settlement of $1.7 billion with $110 million in cash alone.

1 Jeff Bezos & MacKenzie Scott, $38 billion

After 25 years of marriage and four children, Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Scott announced their divorce in July of 2019. In addition to a financial settlement, Scott is expected to also earn 25% of the couple's Amazon stock, earning her a 4% overall stake in the company. With an overall estimated net worth of $118 billion, the divorce settlement resulted in $38 billion for Scott.
