Prêt-à-Porter: 8 of the Most Expensive Red Carpet Looks
We all live for a good old red carpet show. A good red carpet look can even turn into its very own iconic moment. In fact, many people tune into awards shows just to get a glimpse of what you really can compare to a fashion show. Awards shows are no longer just about the actual awards - they are also about who is wearing what, the trending colors for that year, and who took the biggest fashion risks.
The high fashion we see on our screens and the moments that make viewers say "oh wow" certainly do not come cheap. How much are we actually talking? Let's take a look at some celebrities who dressed themselves in red carpet looks with incredibly high price tags.
8 Beyoncé
You could say that the Met Gala is one of fashion's biggest nights so it should come as no surprise that for the event in 2016 Queen B decided to go big herself by wearing a $300,000 custom-made Givenchy gown. The theme for the Met Gala that year was 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology' so naturally Beyoncé's dress was made out of latex (organic of course). The gown was also fully decked out in pearls and each pearl, according to Women Advance, cost $8,000.
7 Cate Blanchett
When she won the Academy Award for Blue Jasmine in 2014, Cate Blanchett accepted the Oscar in a Armani Privé gown that was full of complex trimming. So complex that the New York Times reported that the dress cost $100,000 to make. On top of the dress, she also reportedly wore $18 million worth of Chopard jewelry according to the Times. When Cate was nominated for her role in Notes on a Scandal she showed up to the Oscars in a gunmetal Armani Privé dress that was covered in Swarovski crystal embellishments. Harper's Bazzaar estimated the value of the dress to be about $200,000.
6 Heidi Klum
As a supermodel, Heidi Klum knows how to work a runway and she certainly worked the red carpet at the 2014 Golden Globes. She showed up to the evening wearing an estimated $1 million worth of jewels from celebrity jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz. According to Women Advance, Heidi wore a 200 carat black diamond necklace (which included a 10 carat diamond in the center), black diamond earrings and a black diamond ring.
5 Lady Gaga
For the 2019 Oscars, Lady Gaga showed up in a very tradition (especially for her) Alexander McQueen dress. The dress in itself was beautiful, but what truly topped the outfit was the 128.54 carat yellow diamond Tiffany & Co. necklace she wore around her neck. According to Women Advance, it's the largest yellow diamond ever found. Elle Magazine reported that it had been previously worn by Audrey Hepburn for Breakfast at Tiffany's publicity photos in 1961 and that it had only been worn three other times at award ceremonies.
4 Julia Roberts
It's a good thing Julia Roberts showed up to the 2001 Academy Awards dressed to impress considering she ended up winning that night for her role in Erin Brockovich. To accept her award, Julia wore a black and white Valentino gown that is estimated to be worth $95,000. Hopefully we'll see the glamorous dress again as it's apparently being stored under Julia's bed so that she can one day pass it down to her daughter, Hazel, as reported by People.
3 Jennifer Lawrence
To top her fall on the stars at the 2013 Academy Awards, Jennifer Lawrence wore an $100,000 Christian Dior haute couture dress to the 2016 awards show. The dress was detailed with sheer lace and black feathers. Jennifer had an exclusive $15 million contract with Dior from 2012-2017, as reported by Bustle.
2 Charlize Theron
While she wasn't a nominee at the 2013 Academy Awards, Charlize Theron certainly won the red carpet in a stunning all white Christian Dior gown. The dress, which had a train that swept the floor, a deep-V bodice an an embellished peplum, is estimated to have cost $100,000, according to Marie Claire. But the outfit didn't stop there. Charlize also wore a diamond cuff from Harry Winston that, according to Harper's Bazzaar, was worth $4 million.
1 Lupita Nyong’o
If Calvin Klein is making your dress and embellishing it with pearls, that will run you approximately $150,000. At least it did for Lupita Nyong'o for the 2015 Academy Awards. The dress she wore had 6,000 pearls in total and was a "piece of art" according to Lupita. According to TMZ, the dress was actually stolen the night after Lupita wore it, but was then returned when the thief found out the pearls were fake.
