Imagine having your sweet tooth sparkle and having to call in 48 hours in advance only to shell out over $14,000 after you've satisfied your craving for chocolate, candy, and cream. No, we're not talking about the price of a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. That's the actual price for a dessert plate at Wine3, a restaurant in the Fortress Resort and Spa in Galle, Sri Lanka but recipients of this incredibly expensive treat will be treated to a decadent experience like no other.
Known as the world's most expensive dessert, the treat officially named "The Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence" is handcrafted via special request and with proper notice. The stilt fishing theme of the dessert pays tribute to the livelihood which is practiced by locals and has been for decades.

The costly treat is made with a base of Italian cassata, a round sponge cake infused with liqueur or fruit juices. The cake is layered with ricotta cheese, candied fruit and a sugary filling that is used with cannoli desserts. Moving upward, the cassata features Baileys Irish Cream, a mango and pomegranate compote, and a Champagne sabayon sauce topped with a gold leaf. While modeling chocolate depicts a small figure stilt fishing, a jaw-dropping jewel sits next to the fishing figure. It's the only dessert known in existence to be topped with an 80-carat jewel. The price of the one-of-a-kind handcrafted dessert may change depending on the value of the stone. The Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence is served with handmade studio-flared glass cutlery that has been designed for The Fortress by Glass Studio.
The story goes that the aquamarine that is literally the jewel of the dessert is shrouded in fisherman lore. Some claim that the gem has the power to calm, heal, and soothe. The bright blue color is a representation of the ocean and seas and it has been used for years by sailors and fishermen to bring luck and protection. It's also said to bring couples happiness so this dessert is a win for those in love (and flush with cash).

Back in 2018, it was reported that only two of "The Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgences" have sold. We don't know what the updated number is but we wouldn't be surprised if things haven't changed drastically especially when the pandemic is considered. It's hard to imagine desserts with a $14,000 bill being Door Dashed to bored and hungry people during a quarantine phase.
It turns out that The Big Apple offers some sweet treats that are major wallet-punishers at the same time.
NYC's Serendipity 3 offers a "Golden Opulence Sundae" which features Tahitian vanilla ice cream topped in a 23-carat gold leaf, which is edible along with rare chocolate bits, candied fruit pieces, chocolate truffles, and caviar. The Golden Opulence experience ramps up the opulence factor by being served in a Baccarat Harcourt goblet and an 18-carat gold spoon.
Not exactly suffering from a sweet tooth but craving an expensive nightcap instead? Step into St. Regis New York's restaurant, The King Cole Bar, pluck down $760 and enjoy a glass of cognac that is served out of a crystal bottle with a top made of pure gold. The entire bottle costs slightly over $7,000 if one glass isn't enough.
