Animators, writers, producers and directors have mastered the special formula of creating a film for the entire family. Make a note of any you haven’t seen for the next family movie night, because they’re guaranteed to be good.

8 Disney/Pixar’s Cars – $267 Million (adjusted)

The story of a race car, Lightening McQueen, who ends up in the small town of Radiator Springs and learns the value of friendship was thought to be the first stumble for Pixar Studios according to CNBC, however audiences proved the critics wrong. Young boys flocked to the theater in 2006 to watch fast-driving cars with distinct personalities and enjoyed the relationships formed in the desert town. Voiced by Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman and others left audiences wanting more and Cars 2 debuted in 2011.

7 Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – $268 Million (adjusted)

It’s a tale as old as time, as early as the 18th century, in fact. The story has been depicted in books, a long-running television series and the big screen at least seven times, but no version was ever as popular as Disney’s 1991 musical animated film. The film was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and brought a star-studded cast from Angela Lansbury to Jerry Orbach.

6 Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets – $875 Million

Children fell in love with the variety of pets and their day-to-day adventures as their owners were gone, imagining their own pets with personalities and relationships all their own. A stellar cast including Kevin Hart, Eric Stonestreet, Patton Oswalt and Dana Carvey among others lent their voices to the animals’ adventure and the movie was so popular, they made a sequel. The Secret Life of Pets 2 was released in 2019.

5 DreamWorks’ Shrek 2 – $920 Million

DreamWorks hit their stride with the Shrek franchise. A series that started out slow with the first installment only earning $485 million skyrocketed to success as No. 2 and No. 3 hit the theaters. Once audiences knew of the large, green ogre with a heart of gold, they flocked back to the theaters time and time again. Overall, the four movies featuring Shrek and the spinoff, Puss in Boots earned DreamWorks a total of $3.5 billion, with the second installment at the top of the list. Who knew that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz had stumbled onto a surprise hit?

4 Universal/ Illumination’s Minions – $1.1 Billion

Despicable Me hit theaters in the summer of 2010 and Universal had a hit on their hands. The story of Gru (played by Steve Carrell) is funny, adventurous and a little crude at times, but perhaps the characters that stole the show were the little yellow assistants. The 2015 follow up to the Despicable Me franchise raked in more revenue than Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 combined according to The Wrap.

3 Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 – $1.2 Billion

In 2004, The Incredibles hit the big screen and pulled in a decent $633 million in revenue, however, it was the second installment, 14 years after the original to really bring in the haul. With a cast led by Craig T. Nelson and the plot line of a family with special superpowers, the Incredibles and their success was truly incredible.

2 Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – $1.3 Billion (adjusted)

At the time it was being made, Walt Disney received a lot of negative feedback about the idea. He was already famous for the development of Mickey Mouse and several short cartoons, but a full-length picture just seemed like a failure waiting to happen. With an original budget of $250,000 and the final picture reaching an astronomical (at the time) $1.5 million, it all paid off in the end as Disney received over $66 million ($1 billion adjusted for today). The film has been re-released in theaters eight times between 1944 and 1993 and has been one fans can’t forget for nearly 85 years.

1 Disney’s Frozen II – $1.4 Billion

Believe it or not, Frozen II made slightly more than Frozen ($1.3 Billion). In 2013, Disney animators once again shattered records with their story of two princess sisters, one with special ice-making powers and their tumultuous but loyal relationship. How do you follow that? In 2019, Frozen II was released to fans who had been eagerly awaiting their favorite characters’ return. According to Forbes, the merchandising alone topped $107 billion and edged out nearly 50 percent of other licensed merchandise the year of the hit classic’s release.
