Kim Kardashian's SKKN Brand Hit With Cease & Desist Letters Over Name
The Kardashians are certainly no stranger to the court room. Just recently, they saw a $11.5 million victory in a lawsuit against their former cosmetics partners. Though it seems like one of the uber famous sisters is in he midst of yet another legal mishap.
Kim Kardashian attempted to trademark the name 'SKKN' for her new makeup line. Though, she was hit with a cease and assist from another company that already has the name claimed.
Kim's corporation, Kimsaprincess Inc filed paperwork to trademark the name on July 9th. She took to social media to announce that her current website, KKW Beauty will become inactive starting August 1st. It's clear that the mogul is looking to rebrand her beauty line and this potential new name is a pivotal step in that direction.
"I’m excited to continue to develop and expand my product range and for you to finally be able to experience it the way that I have always envisioned," the celeb said on her Twitter earlier this month.
According to TMZ, the fuss came from lawyers representing Beauty Concepts LLC. They claim that their brand had been using the name 'SKKN' for their website and social media platforms to offer salon and skin services ever since 2017. Beauty Concepts even disclosed in a letter to TMZ that they applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to legally obtain a logo with the name back in March 28. This is a mere two days before Kim first applied to obtain the name herself.
"I have painstakingly built my successful small business with my own sweat equity, hard work, and research. It’s clear that I established my brand first," owner of Beauty Concepts, Cydnie Lunsford says in an email to Complex, "s a young black woman, my mission with SKKN+ is to provide quality skincare and curated full body experiences to enhance each client’s self-care regimen."
Lunsford and her legal team are hoping to stop Kim from using their company's name or this cease and assist. If Kim fails comply, she faces the treat of litigation. Though it's looking like Kim's team isn't intending to back down any time soon. Her attorney, Michael G. Rhodes reached out to TMZ to address the situation.
"We certainly appreciate and support small businesses, and our hat is off to Ms. Lunsford. But the question at hand is one of trademark law and we’ve not done anything deserving of legal action by her," the attorney states.
