Behind The Scenes Drama: Hollywood's Newest Strike Crisis Of 60,000 Workers

It looks like Hollywood’s newest drama is playing out behind the scenes and not in front of the camera. Sixty thousand workers responsible for much of the that goes into creating our favorite movies and shows could be going on strike. If the plan goes ahead, it would be the biggest private sector strike in the US for decades and will grind Hollywood production to a halt.

The International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees represents some 52,000 'below the line' positions in the entertainment industry, such as camera operators, stagehands, set designers, and dozens of others who work together to make movies and television shows possible. The IATSE could go on strike for the first time in decades if an agreement is not reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

The union is voting Sunday until 9 p.m., with results expected to be announced Monday. Analysts expect the workers to vote in favor of authorizing a strike.

“Nobody who works on a multimillion-dollar big-budget picture should have to work out of their car and choose between food and electricity,” Jonas Loeb, communications director for the IATSE, told The Washington Post.

If IATSE does strike, it would be disastrous for the entertainment industry. Production on most TV shows and movies will have to shut down as workers walk off the job. This would leave essentially every position required to make a movie or series vacant.
