Success Hunting: 6 Rules Followed By Matt Damon To Achieve Success
He married Luciana Barroso in 2005 and had three children with her (she also has a daughter from a previous relationship). The dedicated family man has made it clear, the couple refuses to spend more than two weeks apart, and his beliefs don't stop there.
His overnight achievement is perhaps the catalyst for Damon's well-known and insightful plan for success. Here's the list of 'rules', according to Damon, that make a recipe for coming out on top.
6 Never Give Up
Notice, Damon's first acting gig occurred nearly ten years before the young actor was recognized. The Saving Private Ryan star attended Harvard University, but his heart wasn't in it. He frequently skipped classes to pursue an acting opportunity, and despite the many rejections, Damon and Affleck worked on the script for Good Will Hunting simply out of their love of the craft and the need to find a job. Damon has encouraged actors and actresses to channel their desire and energy toward doing something to forward their career, whether that be writing their own material or taking additional acting classes to hone their craft.
5 Believe in Yourself
Hollywood can be extremely critical and full of nay-sayers. In fact, Damon said his own family didn't encourage his pursuit of the big screen. All the more reason to maintain confidence and belief in oneself, because if you don't have it, no one else will either. Damon told Casting Frontier that he, too, discourages people from acting simply because he knows how difficult it can be, but he's quick to encourage those that believe in themselves to not listen to him but follow their dreams.
4 Value Your Relationships
Damon and Luciana married 16 years ago and committed to each other at that time to put each other first. He and his wife made a pact to never spend more than two weeks apart, and that rule has kept their relationship strong and in focus. He recently broke that rule after holding a family meeting to film 2021's Stillwater, but Damon told MSN he's not likely to do it again. Raising four girls, ages 11 to 14 and one, 23, is a pull for Damon that he can't ignore. He said he doesn't like being away from the children and his wife, and that enforces the commitment they made to each other so long ago.
3 Give Back
The Jason Bourne franchise lead took a trip to Zambia in 2000 and learned about the water crisis in the area. He met a 14-year-old girl who walked to the well to receive water for the day, and she shared with him that she wanted to be a nurse. It occurred to Damon at that moment, safe drinking water and basic sanitation were paramount to allowing these children to succeed. According to SUCCESS, Damon co-founded Water.org with Gary White, and they've been working to provide sanitary water across the globe ever since. Also, in 2000, he joined ONE.org, a non-profit group dedicated to eradicating extreme poverty, and is a member of OneXOne and Not On Our Watch, both benefiting children.
2 Support Your Peers
Damon and Affleck joined forces once again when they formed Pearl Street Films and adopted an inclusion rider for their company. Promoted by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, requiring the use of diverse crew and casts for projects in production. Damon has referred to a conversation he once had with Tom Hanks in which Hanks advised Damon to decide not to be nervous around others. He's taken that advice to heart and has worked to treat those around him with respect and dignity, despite their celebrity status.
1 Apologize When Your Wrong
Always vocal about his personal social views, Damon got into some hot water in 2017 on the cusp of the Me Too Movement. The actor allegedly made several phone calls to defend accusers and/or tried to minimize some women's claims. He also claimed the abuse to be on a 'spectrum of behavior' that should be evaluated in sexual misconduct cases, but in early 2018, Damon apologized on The Today Show for his comments and admitted a lack of understanding on the subject. In 2021, he again sparked controversy when discussing anti-LGBTQ language and shared the pride he had in his daughter, correcting his offensive words.
