Boyband Culture: The Many Successes Of One Direction and BTS

One Direction and BTS have gained crazy amounts of popularity within the last decade. The two all-male bands can be compared based on their success in music, tours, and pop culture influence.

There is only a three-year gap between the formation of the two biggest boy bands in the world. Simon Cowell created one Direction in 2010 on the show X-Factor UK where he teamed Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlison, and Liam Payne together. In 2013, BTS was formed when seven members Jin, Jimin, J-Hope, Suga, V, RM, and Jungkook, teamed to introduce K-Pop to everyone around the globe. These bands have achieved astronomical success and popularity, unlike any other group. Their charm, charisma, and catchy tunes have taken the world by storm. While One Direction has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2015, they are still compared to BTS's success.

A strong fan base and gifted vocals are two of the main reasons why One Direction and BTS achieved new career heights. From their music to awards and pop culture influence, let’s compare the impact of One Direction and BTS and their success over the years.

When bands have sold-out concert venues and Billboard-topping singles, they earn millions. One Direction had a net worth of $398 million when they disbanded in 2015. Their revenue came from concerts, music, and merchandise sale, as noted by Money Nation. BTS, on the other hand, has a net worth of $450 million. Their earnings have increased since their record label went public in the stock market, and each member was given a few shares.

One Direction enamored the youth with their catchy pop-rock music talking about friendship and love. Their hits, such as Night Changes and What Makes You Beautiful, centered around love, while songs like History and Little Things were nostalgic. BTS has produced some of the best music, even if the language is not understood by most of its fan base. The K-Pop band discusses mental health issues, and life struggles through their lyrics.

One Direction has released good music videos over the years. Their music videos have amassed over 3 billion views on YouTube until now. Nobody can beat BTS in creating the best content that makes fans go wild when it comes to music videos. Along with catchy music, the band does dance performances in perfectly synchronized choreography that pleases the eye. The band has a whopping $12 billion views on YouTube.

During their five-year journey as a band, One Direction had four tours, resulting in sold-out concerts everywhere. According to Billboard, they were the first artists of 2014 who broke the $200 million sales barrier with their Where We Are Tour. BTS made $115 million during their Love Yourself World Tour in 2019, and the band earned a whopping $71 million from a two-day fan event in June 2021, when they celebrated their eighth anniversary.

While the success rate of the bands based on their fan base is debatable, One Direction and BTS have managed to establish some of the most dedicated fans in the world. One Direction, whose fans are called Directioners, is still going strong, promoting the artists’ solo careers and music. BTS fans call themselves the BTS Army, related to the band’s full name Bangtan Sonyeondan. The term means Bulletproof Boyscouts that fans use to depict themselves as the army while BTS is the armor, as stated by Yahoo.

While either band is not a Grammy Winner yet, they have managed to bag a few hundred awards under their names. One Direction has won 242 awards, and some of the most notable ones are 3 BRITs and 1 Billboard Music Award. Comparatively, BTS has won 396 awards that include 6 American Music Awards and 5 Billboard Music Awards.

Along with their ever-growing popularity, One Direction defied the traits associated with toxic masculinity by showing affection and friendship towards one another. The band used their popularity to introduce products apart from their music. The band launched Our Moment, a fragrance created by the band. One Direction also published their autobiography called Where We Are. BTS has become a cultural phenomenon and a pioneer in making people aware of the beauty of K-Pop music. Even though the language is difficult to understand, K-Pop has united fans worldwide with their message to love each other and stay strong. BTS has also monetized its popularity by collaborating with big brands such as McDonald’s to create their meal.

2016 was a big year for One Direction when the band broke six Guinness World Records as their four back-to-back albums debuted at the Number 1 spot on Billboard. One Direction was also the most subscribed band on YouTube, with 36 million subscribers. BTS has dethroned One Direction and several other artists and bands with a total of 23 Guinness World Records until now for their music streams and digital downloads. As mentioned by Band Wagon, they have entered the Hall Of Fame for the 2022 book by Guinness World Records.

Music, popularity and sales are aspects that are compared to count the success these bands have amassed over the years. While their fan bases are constantly compared, the artists hold great respect for each other. The artists from both bands have worked hard to earn their center stage to stardom, and their successes are unique in their ways.
