Animated Millions: 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films Of 2021

From classic animation films like The Lion King and Aladdin to more modern, real-life animation graphic movies such as The Incredibles, Toy Story, and Ice Age. There is no doubting the cleverness of actors and actresses to be the voice of animated characters that target a much younger crowd. There is an excess number of A-list actors that have received grand paychecks for their roles in animation films, such as Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. While Disney may hold the crown for some of the greatest and most successful animated films of all time, we're going to cover the ten highest-grossing animation movies for 2021 so far.

10 Tom & Jerry

Released by Warner Bros. Pictures in February 2021, Tom and Jerry was an incredibly successful animation project. These cartoon comedy short films have been filling bellies with laughter since the 1940s, when it was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. During the early 1960s, Tom and Jerry became the highest-grossing animated short film of that era and even out-performed Looney Toons. In the years following, a myriad of spin-offs were made in order to capitalize on the success of the brand. So when this classic cartoon depicts the sometimes friendly, and other times destructive, rivalry between a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry was made into a full-length animation film, both young and old went out to show their support. On a $79 million budget. The film grossed $132 million at the box office in no time.

9 Raya And The Last Dragon

Similar to movies like Moana, Raya, and The Last Dragon is the product of Walt Disney Studios and is centered around the fantasy, action, and adventure genres. The animation follows the life of a young lady named Raya (played by Kelly Marie Tran), who embarks on a journey to search out the last remaining dragon to restore the harming that existed between humans and mythical beasts more than 500 years ago. The dragons at that time sacrificed themselves to save humanity from a great evil force that had divided her land. Raya must now find the dragon to restore peace and end the division of her land. The movie was quite successful, grossing $130 million at the worldwide box office.

8 Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

This movie is wildly hilarious and is full of wit, twists, and suspense. While the presence of real-life actors like Mr. Thomas McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson), his wife Bea (Rose Byrne), and the savvy book publisher Nigel Basil-Jones (David Oyelowo) took away from a completely animated effect, it did bring some element of reality to the film. Peter Rabbit, voiced over by James Corden, grows tired of being stigmatized as a troublemaker in all of Bea's Peter Rabbit storybooks. He has been led away from his friends and embraced by a rabbit thief who schools him on being a street criminal. But in the end, he realizes he is being conned and outsmarts the thief. Despite being delayed due to the pandemic, Peter Rabbit grossed nearly $154 million on a $45 million budget.

7 Space Jam 2: A New Legacy

Fans should've seen this one coming. The first Space Jam starred Michael Jordan, who was at the prime of his basketball career at the time. In Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, Lebron James was chosen to keep the legacy alive. Similar to the original movie, Lebron and his son, Dom, find themselves in trouble. But instead of evil aliens as the antagonist, Lebron and his son find themselves trapped in some sort of digital prison by an AI villain. He teams up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toon crew to play a determining basketball game against the AI's digitized champions called the Goon Squad. Along for the ride were Michael B. Jordan, Kyrie Irving, and Zendaya Coleman. The film raked in $162 million at the box office. Much less than the original Space Jam, which saw a $250 million return at the box office.

6 The Adam's Family 2

The Addam's Family 2 Animated film was produced as a follow-up from the original 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values, and the original 1991 film, The Addams Family, as well as the first Addams Family animation film in 2019. The original cast was swapped out for the animated version of the movie, but the creepy characters all remained the same. The voices behind a few of the characters were Oscar Isaac as Gomez Adams (Morticia's husband), Charlie Theron as Morticia Adams (Gomez's wife), Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams (The Addams' daughter), and Javon Walton as Pugsley Addams (The Addams' son). The film was released internationally on October 8 and accumulated $110 million at the worldwide box office.

5 Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

For all the anime lovers out there, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train would have been one at the top of your list. But this anime is different in that it sheds light on the great Western following behind Japanese anime films. Although Demon Slayer came out toward the end of 2020 during the pandemic, it still managed to gross $503 million at the worldwide box office, something that no other Hollywood production did that year. In addition to out-selling Western film productions, it also became the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film of all time. The success of this dark fantasy anime film is even more pronounced since it only had a budget of #15 million.

4 Luca

Walt Disney happens to produce some extremely out-of-the-box films that have a subtle ability to produce a euphoric experience while challenging your perception of reality. Let's not forget that they are responsible for animations such as Beauty and The Beast, Lilo and Stitch, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King. They had recently added Luca to this list when it was released at the Aquarium of Genoa in Italy on June 13, 2021, and in the United States on June 18. The computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy film features the life of a sea monster named Luca, who lives off the coast of Portorosso in Italy. He befriends a fellow sea monster child named Alberto, who lives along above the surface. Together, they set out to enjoy life as supposedly normal boys. Despite the restraints due to Covid, the film still managed to gross $49.5 million at the box office.

3 Wish Dragon

Animations referencing Chinese traditions have been produced en masse for many years now; just look at Disney's Mulan and Raya and The Last Dragon. So when Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation teamed up along with Jackie Chan to produce the computer-animated fantasy/comedy film, Wish Dragon, it was met with mixed reviews. Directed toward a much younger crowd, Wish Dragon was released in January 2021 on a $25 million budget. However, possibly due to the lockdown effects of Covid-19, it was barely able to break even, clocking in gross earnings of $25.9 million at the worldwide box office.

2 Vivo

Another computer-animated film produced by Sony Pictures Animations this year was Vivo. The film is based in Havanna, Cuba, and is recognized as Sony's first-ever musical adventure. In fact, this may be the very characteristic that saved the movie from receiving a horrible critique. Rotten Tomatoes reports gave the film an average score of 6.8/10, with 87% of 90 critics giving the film a positive review. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was the voice of Vivo, is a singer and composer by profession, and his catchy songs are one of the main reasons the film received 'generally favorable views'. However, the film only brought in $1.1 million at the box office.

1 Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal

Sailor Moon is a Japanese magical girl action fantasy directed by Chiaki Kon. It was first released as an anime series in 1992 before the first movie, Sailor Moon S, was created in 1994. It's been 26 years since a movie release, and fans were ecstatic about Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon External's 2021 release, especially on the heels of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Originally scheduled to be released in the summer of 2020, it was delayed because of the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequently came out in two parts. The first was on January 8, 2021, and the second was on February 11, 2021. Both films amassed a gross of $1,130,225 at the box office and left viewers and fans satisfied with their return to the big screen.
