Guy Ritchie's Next Film With Jake Gyllenhaal Acquired By Amazon & MGM
Shooting is slated to begin on January 24 in Alicante, Spain, with further hiring to be announced soon. Substantial transactions have also been completed with local purchasers in several international locations, with STX managing the marketing and finance for Ritchie. Gyllenhaal will portray Sgt. John Kinley, who is during his last term of service in Afghanistan while he is partnered with native translator Ahmed to explore the territory in the $55 million-budgeted action-thriller. After the patrolling unit is attacked, Kinley and Ahmed are the sole survivors. With enemy troops closing in, Ahmed sacrifices his life to bring a disabled Kinley over miles of treacherous terrain to safety. Returning to American territory, Kinley discovers that Ahmed and his family were not allowed the guaranteed transit to America. Kinley travels to the combat zone, committed to defending his comrade and fulfilling his obligation to rescue Ahmed and his family well before armed militias do.
MGM and Amazon have acquired Jake Gyllenhaal’s Afghan war film (still unnamed). The transaction has been completed in several locations. The film revolves around a war hero and his translator exploring the enemy territory.
Amazon contributed more than half of the funding for this one. Prime Video has acquired rights to the film in Europe, Australia, Canada, Latin America, South Africa, and the post-theatrical window in the United States. MGM will release the film under its United Artists Releasing label in the United States, with a typical cinematic window. Yet, Amazon and MGM aren't the only important collaborators. Yandex, the Russian financial and internet corporation that owns native broadcaster Kinopoisk provided significant pre-production funding. Kinopoisk owns all copyrights in the CIS. Their funding will be the first instance a Russian streaming platform has played a significant role in co-financing a movie directed by a prominent international filmmaker. Independent distributors in Asia and the Middle East have also picked up the film. Kino in Japan, Joy N Cinema in Korea, Moviecloud in Taiwan, and Phars in the Middle East are among the clients. City tax rebates in Spain, as well as Comerica bank, are other elements of the financial picture, according to The Wrap.
Ritchie will produce the film, which he co-wrote with Atkinson and Marn Davies. Ritchie and Atkinson are directing under their Toff Guys label, along with Berger and STXfilms' John Friedberg. Kinopoisk is controlled by Yandex and would be executive produced by Olga Filipek.
