Jim Carrey's 10 Highest-Grossing Movies | TheRichest
There are a handful of elite comedic actors in Hollywood who have left their mark in film, and Jim Carrey is one of them. A Canadian native-born in 1962, Carrey got his first breakthrough in American comedy with the comedy sketch series, In Living Color, created by Keenan Ivory Wayans, he effortlessly stood out (being one of the few caucasian comedians on the show) and soon rose to fame in the 1990s, co-starring with celebrities such as Mary Sean Young, Courtney Cox, and Dan Marino. Here are ten of the highest-grossing movies starring the audaciously hilarious Jim Carrey.
11 Bruce Almighty
While some may consider it to be blasphemy, Bruce Almighty gave the world a different perspective of how a Supreme God can be down to earth...literally. Released in 2003, the comedic fantasy is recognized as one of the highlights of Carrey's acting career. To share in his creative genius were other A-list celebrities, such as Morgan Freeman (God), Jennifer Aniston (Grace Connelly), and Catherine Bell (Susan Ortega). The film follows a neighborhood news reporter (Bruce Nolan) who is dissatisfied with his job, his wife, his car, and his life in general. After a fatal car crash, he meets God (Morgan Freeman), who entrusts him with his power on earth. He must now decide what is most important to him as he has great power and responsibility. The film grossed a heavenly $485 million at the box office.
10 The Mask
Released in 1994, The Mask was probably every little boy's favorite movie. After all, they made an animated series for the movie just a year later in 1995, starring Rob Paulsen, Jim Cummings, and Ben Stein. Carrey plays the role of Stanley Ipkiss, an average bank clerk who lives with his dog, Milo. The shy and quirky Stanley becomes an ultra-confident playboy with enough swagger and charm to sweep the local nightclub singer, Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz) off her feet after she finds a mask possessed with the spirit of the Norse god, Loki. However, just like Loki, he finds himself caught in all forms of mischief. On an $18 million budget, the film hit a peak of $352 million at the global box office.
9 How The Grinch Stole Christmas
In the year 2000, we saw Carrey succeed in another role where he hides behind a mask, this time behind that of the Grinch. Directed by Ron Howard, the flexible and easily-adaptable comedian switches to the role of lead antagonist in the live-action adaptation of Dr. Suess's tale of the loathsome grouch in How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Carrey is accompanied by a cast of other wonderful actors who help fulfill the roles of Whoville's wonderful citizens, such as Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), Clarnella (Mindy Sterling), Mayor Augustus Maywho (Jeffrey Tambor), and Martha May Whovier (Christine Baranski). The film was a Christmas movie classic, out-performing other popular holiday films with a box office grossing of $345 million.
8 Batman Forever
One of the remarkable things about comedy is that you can get away with playing even the biggest antagonists and still be loved, even by those on the side of the hero. Jim Carrey knew how to pull this off to perfection, as we see in his role as Riddler in the 1995 action film Batman Forever. He unleashed his reign of terror alongside fellow villain Harvey Dent aka Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), who both have a vendetta against the elusive caped hero of Gotham City, Batman (Val Kilmer). Along for the ride was Batman's spicy love interest, Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), Sugar (Drew Barrymore), and Batman's trusted sidekick, Robin (Chris O' Donnell). The series grossed $337 million at the worldwide box office.
7 Liar Liar
Still, in the early stages of his professional acting career, Jim Carrey broadens the scope of his acting horizon in the comedy, Liar Liar. He plays the role of a cunningly convincing attorney, Fletcher Reede, whose crafty dishonesty makes him a king in the courtroom. However, his gifted deception is a double-edged sword and begins to wreak havoc on his personal relationships, such as with his wife Audrey Reede (Maura Tierney) and son, Max Reede (Justin Cooper). Fletcher becomes bound to a wish his son makes for him to stop lying for 24 hours, which happens to take place on the day of a breakthrough case for his career. The film grossed $302.7 million at the worldwide box office.
6 The Truman Show
Do you always feel like somebody's watching you as obsessively as the NSA in Will Smith's Enemy of The State? While the thought of perceiving oneself to be that important may seem narcissistic, it was the reality of Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) in the 1998 sci-fi/drama, The Truman Show. Truman continues life day-by-day unaware that his life serves as the content for a massive live broadcast reality show. The show's Executive producer, Christoff (Ed Harris), even goes as far as replacing Truman's true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone) with the woman he knows as his wife, Meryl (Laura Linney). But as more clues begin to surface, Truman must decide whether he should remain passive or fight to live his real life. The amusing yet shocking film made a box office bank of $264 million.
5 Dumb & Dumber
There is a thin line between dangerously hilarious and asinine, and the 1994 comedy, Dumb and Dumber, captures the crossing of that threshold perfectly. The film follows the journey of two insufferably goofy friends, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) who come upon a suitcase full of money that was left inside of Harry's car. The owner of the large sum of money is Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly), who forgot the money in his vehicle. Unaware that they have the ransom money for kidnapping in their possession, they attempt to return it to the owner. Along the way, they are chased by hired killers and the police but manage to escape despite their clumsy disposition. The film grossed a remarkable $247 million at the box office and even returned with Dumb And Dumber: When Harry Met Floyd (2003) and Dumb And Dumber To (2014).
4 Yes Man
In 2008, Canada's favorite comedian hit the big screen once again with the rom-com, Yes Man. Jim Carrey stars as Carl Allen, a bank loaner who has fallen into a negative rut in life ever since his divorce from his ex-wife, Stephanie (Molly Sims). An old colleague named Nick (John Michael Higgins) inspires Carl to attend a motivational seminar that encourages people into toxic positivity by saying "Yes!" to every opportunity. He applies the wisdom of the guru, Terrence Bundley (Terence Stamp), and meets a new romantic interest, Allison (Zooey Deschanel), rekindles his strained relationship with friends, Peter (Bradley Cooper) and Rooney (Danny Masterson), among other spontaneous achievements. With a great cast of characters, the film grossed $223.2 million on a $70 million budget.
3 Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was released in 1995 and is the sequel to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which was released in 1994, starring Courtney Cox, Tone Loc, and Dan Marino. Jim Carrey reprised as Ace Ventura, the quirky and over-exaggerative animal whisperer who must now travel to Africa in search of an endangered white bat. With his sidekick, Fulton Greenwall (Ian McNeice), he retrieves the sacred animal that was kidnapped as it was about to be offered as a wedding payment to a Wachati princess (Sophie Okonedo) by the Wachootoo Prince (Tommy Davidson). Although judged harshly by critics, the sequel managed to gross even more than the first Pet Detective, earning $212.4 million at the worldwide box office.
2 Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Many consider Carrey's antics to be more clownish than acting, but he isn't void of real acting potential. We get a glimpse of this in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, released in 2004. The film was inspired by the children's novel series A Series of Unfortunate Events and is an adaptation of the first three novels: The Bad Beginning (1999), The Reptile Room (1999), and The Wide Window (2000). Carrey played the role of a cruel antagonist, Count Olaf, who is made the guardian of Violet Baudelaire (Emily Browning), Klaus Baudelaire (Liam Aiken), and Sunny Baudelaire (Kara Hoffman) who are left orphaned after their parents die in a mansion fire. The film also features actors such as Meryl Streep, Jude Law, Jennifer Coolidge, and Cedric The Entertainer. Despite being the lowest on the list, the film grossed a decent box office price of $209 million.
