Regina King has had an outstanding acting career seemingly from the very start of her journey. Her raw emotion and pensive stare have lined her up with some of the greats in Hollywood. One such lineup was with Will Smith, Jon Voight, Gene Hackman, and other highly-popularized actors and actresses in Enemy Of The State. King played the role of Carla Dean, the wife of her lawyer husband, Robert "Bobby" Dean. She gets entangled in a dangerous web of conspiracy exposing the surveillance of domestic citizens against their will. When her husband takes on a case incriminating a mafia kingpin, it threatens to blow the lid off the National Security Agency (NSA) who have been permitted, by a US Congress, to legally spy on US citizens. Although controversial, the 1998 film earned a whopping $250.6 million at the worldwide box office.
9 Daddy Day Care
Still relatively early in her career, in 2003 Regina King landed the role of Kim Hinton, the wife of Charlie Hinton, played by Eddie Murphy. The family comedy explains the life of a father, Charlie Hinton, who gets laid off from his job and is forced to be a stay-at-home dad. Frustrated with his unemployed state and the fact that his wife, Kim, is the one bringing home the bacon, he and his friend Phil (Jeff Garlin) decide to open a daycare. As the clientele increases, they soon require help and employ Marvin (Steve Zahn) to assist. However, his success brings rivalry from a more established daycare center run by Mrs. Harridan (Angelica Huston), which turns into a battle of the daycares. Daddy Daycare was a success, grossing $164.3 million at the box office.
8 Legally Blonde 2
Released in 2003, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde is the second installment of the romance/comedy, Legally Blonde, which was released in 2001. Reese Witherspoon is the star in both movies and plays the role of Elle Woods, a fancy diva-type that decides to embark on a quest to find the mother of her beloved Chihuahua, Bruiser, so the two can be reunited. She even hires an investigator to find the animal, which reveals that the animal is being used for testing. While working for Congresswoman Victoria Rudd (Sally Field), she meets Grace Rossiter (Regina King), the Chief of Staff for Rudd, who shares her sentiment that politics is a dirty game when it is revealed that Rudd's intentions aren't genuine. Although considered a feminist masterpiece, it still grossed $125.3 at the box office.
7 Ray
Perhaps one of Regina's most outstanding and largely unsung roles was her portrayal of Margie Hendricks in Ray. Ray, as one can assume from the title, is a musical/drama about the life, struggle, success, addiction, and eventual downfall of one of the greatest singers, composers, pianists, and soul-jazz pioneers in American history. The blind but musically gifted Ray Charles was played by Jamie Foxx, while his wife, Della Bea Robinson, was played by Kerry Washington. Margie Hendricks (Regina King), played one of Ray's backup singers and on-the-road mistresses. The toxic love affair affects Ray's marriage, which eventually crumbles. King's performance bought a sense of vigor and passion to the movie, which caused it to gross $124.8 million at the box office.
6 Miss Congeniality 2: Armed And Fabulous
The 2005 release of Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous puts Sandra Bullock again as the main character, Gracie Hart. Although Hart prefers the rugged fieldwork of an FBI agent, she goes undercover as a competing model in a beauty pageant. The film centers around Lance Barton, an amateur comedian who ends up at the gates of Heaven after an untimely death in a car accident. When it becomes clear that the heavenly host, Keyes (Eugene Levy) and King (Chazz Palminteri) made a mistake, they temporarily place Lance's soul in the body of Charles Wellington (Brian Rhodes), one of the richest men in America. But despite the obvious disparity in features, Lance finds love, uses his fortune for good and improves his act as a comedian. After grossing $71.8 million at the box office, it's safe to say it was worth the out-of-body experience.
4 A Cinderella Story
Still, in the early stages of her career, Regina King bought the same element of life and sassiness to the 2004 film, A Cinderella Story. The teen romance movie was basically an adaptation of the original Cinderella story, where Samantha Montgomery (Hilary Duff) works as a janitor for her cruel stepmother, Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge) at the diner owned by her deceased father, where her supervisor, Rhonda (Regina King) also works. To escape her miserable life, she begins an online relationship with an anonymous boy through text. However, when she learns that the anonymous boy is Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), the most handsome boy in school, she is shocked. On a $19 million budget, the film grossed $70.1 million.
3 Boyz N The Hood
Representing the area she was born and raised in, Los Angeles, California, King would appear in a minor role as Shalika in John Singleton's Boyz N The Hood. She adopts an orphaned gorilla named Joe, who has a rare genetic disorder causing him to grow 15 feet tall. She seeks refuge for the gorilla, but Straaser wants the primate for himself. The 1998 film grossed $50.6 million globally.
