The World’s Largest Cut Diamond Could Sell For $6.8 Million
If you have $6.4 million laying around, you might be able to pick up a 555.55-carat fancy black diamond that will go up for auction via Sotheby’s next month. The gem, dubbed 'the Enigma' was previously listed as the world’s largest cut diamond and experts believe that stone must have come from space millions of years ago.
Sotheby's claims that a natural faceted black diamond of this size is exceptionally rare. Sotheby's is expecting the stunning gem to sell for $6.8 million at auction, which the auction house plans on having in London next month. Experts believe that the stone was either created from a meteoric impact or from a "diamond-bearing" asteroid that collided with our planet some time ago.
“To have a natural faceted black diamond of this size is an extremely rare occurrence and its origins are shrouded in mystery,” Sotheby’s states on its website.
Not only is the expensive rock 555.55-carats, but it also has 55 facets (sides). This, according to Sotheby’s, is “a technical feat for one of the toughest diamonds in existence.”
“‘The Enigma’ is a marvel of rarity and size, and its brilliance and high polish are a testament to the delicate and highly skilled undertaking of diamond cutting,” she continued. "Its sale represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the rarest, billion-year-old cosmic wonders known to humankind."
According to CNN, the diamond had belonged to an anonymous consignor for nearly two decades. The shape of the gemstone resembles the Middle Eastern palm symbol of the Hamsa, which signifies a sign of protection.
While this black diamond may be unique, mysterious, and stunning, it is far from the most expensive diamond to go up for auction. That honor belongs to “The Pink Star,” which jewelers acknowledge as one of the world’s rarest gems. The Pink Star was also auctioned off by Sotheby’s in 2017, and its winning bid of $71 million made it the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction.
While it’s certainly possible for The Enigma to fetch that amount, Sotheby’s told CNN that black diamonds faceted like The Enigma generally sell for $13,600 per carat. This puts the starting bid at about what similar, albeit smaller, gems of this type have sold for in the past.
