Hackers Steal $40,000 From Soccer Star Neymar's Bank Account

Soccer star Neymar had $40,000 drained from his bank account by a hacker, though authorities have already arrested someone in connection to the digital theft.

According to Punch, authorities in Sao Paulo, Brazil have confirmed that a 20-year-old man has been arrested and is under suspicion for orchestrating the crime. The alleged hacker – whose name has not been made public – reportedly worked at Paris St-Germain (PSG), a bank in which both Neymar and his father, Neymar Santos Sr., had accounts.

Brazilian authorities didn’t say Neymar’s name when confirming the arrest, rather opting to say the suspected criminal was arrested for “defrauding bank clients.” However, the officer in charge of the case later confirmed to the press Neymar was targeted.

It’s unclear if Neymar was the only victim of the crime, or if other high-profile accounts were also affected.

As a bank employee, the accused hacker is believed to have secured the password for bank accounts from a colleague, allowing him to transfer funds to himself.

Although only one person has been arrested so far, it appears the authorities believe the hacker was working in conjunction with other individuals. Sports Brief reports that it’s suspected the bank employee was “operating as part of a criminal organization.”

Additionally, the outlet notes that authorities have hinted they’ve already identified other individuals who they believe were involved with the crime.

It remains unclear when the crime took place or how long it took Neymar and his father to notice. But reports say the hacker drained money from Neymar’s account in small increments (only several thousand dollars at once), likely in hopes that the athlete wouldn’t notice the money gone.

While Neymar’s account was the one targeted, Punch notes that the soccer star’s father also had access to the account. Once the father-and-son duo caught onto the theft, they reported the incident to the bank, who has since reimbursed them for the money that had been wrongly withdrawn.

$40,000 is a large sum of money, but only made a slight dent in Neymar’s net worth, which reports suggest is as high as $200 million as of 2022. The 30-year old is widely touted as the most expensive soccer player in the world.

Celebrity Net Worth says the soccer star earns $78 million per year in his salary alone, which has steadily increased by the millions each year. His current contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which he signed in May 2021, will last until the summer of 2025.
