Jim Carrey Would Sue Will Smith For $200 Million Over Oscars Attack

Jim Carrey is calling out Will Smith for his attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars, saying that he was “sickened” by what he saw. The actor was promoting a new film when he claimed he would have taken Smith to court for $200 million if he was in Rock's shoes—because “that video is going to be there forever.”

Carrey was on CBS Mornings to promote his new flick Sonic 2 when the conversation turned to the viral Oscars moment. Co-host Gayle King asked for his thoughts on the attack, and how he felt about Smith taking the stage moments later to accept an award.

“I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video's gonna be there forever,” Carrey said of the viral clip. “It's gonna be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time.”

He continued: “You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”

After the infamous slap, Smith returned to the stage to accept the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams’ father in King Richard.

On stage, the actor apologized to the Academy and fellow nominees—but not to Rock. Several actors stood up after Smith's big win was announced, including fellow Best Actor nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, actress Maya Rudolph, and Best Director nominee Paul Thomas Anderson.

“I was sickened by the standing ovation,” Carrey said of the moment. “I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like this is a clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore.”

The Bruce Almighty actor briefly crossed paths with Smith in the 1990s on Fox's In Living Color, and says that he doesn’t have anything against him—but says the attack was not a good look for Smith, calling it a "selfish moment."

Smith has the resources to survive a $200 million lawsuit while still enjoying the lap of luxury. The actor has a fortune estimated to be worth somewhere north of $350 million. Thanks to his numerous acting gigs over the last three decades he can afford to drop $42 million for a stunning mansion fit for a fresh prince.
