Being born in South Wales, he has received both BAFTA Awards from England and Academy Awards from his career in America. 10 Thor: Ragnarok
Marvel DC Studios struck gold when they released Thor in 2011. The value of the film only increased with each movie series, much to the credit of a great ensemble of actors, of which Hopkins was a part. Thor: Ragnarok was released in 2017 as the sequel to Thor, and follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who is the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), the king of Asgard. Thor is imprisoned by a demon named Surtur (Rachel House) who wants to destroy Asgard by uniting its crown with the eternal flame burning in Odin's vault. After Thor breaks free and defeats Surtur, he is shocked to find his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) posing as Odin in his absence. Thor goes in search of Odin, who reveals to him that he is dying, and once he is dead, his firstborn daughter, Hela (Cate Blanchett) will be free from the prison he placed her in because of her immense power. On a budget of $180 million, the film grossed $850.48 million at the box office.
9 Thor: The Dark World
Reprising their roles in 2013's Thor: The Dark World is much of the same cast of characters, with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as the lead actor. However, Marvel's eighth film installment gives a bit of history on a war that existed long ago between the gods of Asgards and a race of malevolent beings known as the Dark Elves. One of the chief dark elves, Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), seeks to release a weapon, known as the Aether, that will destroy all nine realms, including earth. The Aether was buried in a secret location for safe-keeping but has been found by Jodie Foster (Natalie Portman) who is now its host. Realizing that she has the power to destroy herself and the nine realms, Thor must bring her to Asgard before Dark Elf Melekeith finds her. Featuring other great actors such as Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, and Stellan Skarsgård, the film grossed $644.6 million worldwide.
8 Transformers: The Last Knight
As the years wore on and Hopkins received more recognition and acting credentials, there wasn't a movie he would be featured in that would bomb at the box office. So when he was featured in the fifth movie installment in 2017, Transformers: The Last Knight, success was assured. In this movie series, the Transformers and the humans are at war and it seems the only key to saving the future is a historical alien staff that was given to a wizard named Merlin (Stanley Tucci). Together with Cade (Mark Wahlberg), Viviane (Laura Haddock), Bumblebee (Erik Aadahl), and an English lord named Sir Edmond Burton (Anthony Hopkins), they must retrieve the staff, which is buried underwater in a spacecraft. The sci-fi action movie grossed $602.8 million at the box office.
7 Thor
Released in 2011, the Marvel Studios superhero film production, Thor, tells the story of Thor's insolence to Asgard's king, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) after his crafty brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) allows the ancient enemy race of Frost Giants to hinder Thor's ascent to the throne of Asgard, which causes Thor to react in anger against his Odin's wishes and break the truce between the Asgardian and the Frost Giants by attacking Laufey (Colm Feore), king of the Frost Giants and Thor's biological father. As a form of punishment, Odin banishes Thor to earth to live like a mortal, and he loses his godly powers as well as his hammer. There, he meets Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and they begin a romance. Meanwhile, Odin falls into a stupor, and Loki takes the rule of Asgard's throne, much to the distaste Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Thor's friend. She and the Warriors Three attempt to convince Heimdall (Idris Elba) to permit Thor access back into Asgard. Thor's favorable response earned the film $449.3 million at the box office.
6 Noah
Next to the popular biblical account of Moses in Egypt, Noah and the flood is probably the most frequently mentioned biblical event. It's no surprise, then, that both Noah, starring Russel Crowe, and Exodus: Gods and Kings, starring Christian Bale, were released together in 2014. After the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world, which turned it very corrupt. A band of angels known as The Watchers, descend to Earth to help mankind, against God's orders, and lose their glorious form. Noah witnesses his father, Lamech (Marton Csokas) killed by Tubal-Cain (Finn Wittrock), a descendent of Cain who committed the first murder against his brother, Abel. As the state of the world deteriorates, Noah, his wife, Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), Ila (Emma Watson) and, sons Ham (Logan Lerman), Shem (Douglas Booth), and Japheth (Leo McHugh Carroll) must follow God's instruction to build an ark to save themselves and the animal species of Earth before a global cataclysmic flood. The modern biblical depiction grossed $352.8 million globally.
5 Hannibal
Now Hopkins had taken on psychopathic roles early on in his career, like when he played the role of the mentally unstable ventriloquist, Corky, in Richard Attenborough's Magic in 1978. However, nothing would be compared to his role in Silence of The Lamb and Hannibal as the cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter. Hannibal was released in 2001 reprises the role of Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling, an FBI Agent who is tasked with capturing Hannibal. She must do so before Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), a wealthy child molester whose face is now disfigured by the hands of Hannibal, finds him. Perhaps the most horrific scene in the movie is of Hannibal cutting out part of Paul Krendler's (Ray Liotta) brain, frying it, and feeding it to him. Talk about a no-brainer! With all its suspense and graphic displays, the film grossed $350 million at the box office.
4 How The Grinch Strole Christmas
Hopkins has been considered the most talented actor of his generation not only for animating pages of scripts in front of the camera. He is also known for his incredible ability to memorize pages of text and repeat them verbatim while staying in character! Apart from that, he is recognized for the many dialects he has picked up during his career. Therefore, it made sense to make him the narrator in the Christmas musical-comedy, How The Grinch Strole Christmas, released in 2000. Out of all the Whos of Whoville, only the devious Grinch (Jim Carrey) hates the Christmas holiday. Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) is a kind little girl, and after witnessing the Grinch save her, she seeks to know more about him. The town's mayor, Augustus MayWho (Jeffrey Tambor), has a vendetta against the Grinch. But Cindy manages to bring out the best in him. The Christmas classic grossed $345.4 million that year.
3 The Silence Of The Lambs
Released in 1999, the psychological horror was introduced as The Silence of The Lambs, as was Anthony Hopkins' sadistic character, Hannibal Lecter. The film follows FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) who is assigned to a new case at the request of the FBI chief, Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn), which involves interviewing former psychiatrist and imprisoned cannibalistic killer, Hannibal Lecter. Crawford hopes that the interview will provide insight into another case involving Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb (Ted Levine), who removes the skin from the bodies of his dead female victims. In a series of psychological sparring, Lector bargains with Starling to be transferred to another prison in exchange for personal information about Buffalo Bill, who has kidnapped the daughter of Senator Martin (Diane Martin), Catherine Martin (Brook Smith). Starling rescues Catherine and kills Bill, but Lector has broken free from prison and is still back on the hunt. Regarded as one of Hopkins' most memorable actors, the film grossed $275.7 million.
2 The Mask Of Zorro
Other than Odin in Thor, the only other superhero role Hopkins has played was in The Mask of Zorro, released in 1998. The film is set in 1821 California, where a masked swordsman named Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) has taken up the name of Zorro to fight against the Spanish in the Mexican War of Independence and stand for the cause of oppressed Mexican commoners. Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) is a town's crooked governor and begins to suspect de la Vega as the masked Zorro. While attempting to arrest him at his residence, Montero shoots de la Vega's wife, Esperanza (Julieta Rosen), who he secretly loved. Shortly after, Alejandro (Antonio Banderas) offers to be trained by de la Vega to avenge the brutal beheading of his brother, Joaquin. Together, they plan to get revenge on Montero, as well as release Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) from his clutches. Against a budget of $95 million, the film grossed a cool $233.7 million.
1 Bram Stroker's Dracula
Before we knew Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing, Anthony Hopkins assumed the role of the vampire slayer. The film begins with Vlad The Impaler (Gary Oldman) who becomes Count Dracula in 1462 after learning his wife, Elisabeta, killed herself after his enemies lied and told her that he died in battle. Dracula cursed God at that moment and swore to rise from the grave to take revenge on his enemies. Fast-forward to 1897, and a young man named Jonathan (Keanu Reeves) has come to discuss Dracula's real estate acquisitions. Jonathan is preparing to marry his fiance, Mina (Winona Ryder), who Dracula believes is the reincarnation of Elisabeta. After seducing, biting, and transforming Mina's friend, Lucy (Sadie Frost) into a vampire, Van Helsing is requested for the case. Despite Van Helsing's attempts to protect Mina, she is also convinced that she is Elisabeta, and wants to elope with Dracula, which causes Jonothan to kill himself. The vampire horror goes down as a classic and grossed $215.8 million at the box office.
