American singer, songwriter, record producer, musician, and dancer Bruno Mars has amazingly amassed a net worth of $175 million throughout his career. The singer who is born and raised in Hawaii is known for his stage performances combining with retro showmanship, and performing in varied musical styles, such as pop, soul, R&B, funk, reggae, disco, and rock. Bruno Mars’ real name is Peter Gene Hernandez and he was born on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father is Peter Hernandez who is of half Puerto Rican and half Ashkenazi Jewish and his mother Bernadette San Pedro Bayot is has Filipino and Spanish blood. His parents met when his mother immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines and was introduced to each other in a show where his mother was Hula dancer and his father was playing the percussion. He has five siblings and came from a musical family which has exposed him to a varied types of music genres like rock and roll, reggae, hip hop, and rhythm and blues.
Bruno Mars’ parents are both musically inclined since his mother is a singer and a dancer and his father used to perform Little Richard’s music. His uncle is also an Elvis Presley impersonator who encouraged him to perform and impersonate the king of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson hits. This has inspired him to be a performer himself. At an early age of four years old, he has started performing five times a week with his family’s band called The Love Notes. He became popular among the Hawaiian residents as the young Elvis Presley impersonator. Impersonating Elvis Presley had a major impact on Bruno Mars’ musical evolution and performances. When Motown dropped Mars, he signed with Westside Independent with American record producers Steve Lindsey and Cameron Strang in 2005. Mars realized that the best way to jumpstart his career was to write and produce hit songs.
American record producer Lindsey mentored Mars on writing pop music and mentored him throughout his journey. Lindsey believes in the potential of Mars’ talent and musical ability so he showed him the ins and outs of writing songs. During this time, Mars held back for about five years to learn more about the extensive catalog of hit music. At this time, Philip Lawrence came into the picture and asked Mars to meet with him and soon they began collaborating and writing songs together. However it was not as easy as it sounds as they were rejected numerous times.
Lawrence introduced Mars to Aaron Bay-Schuck from Atlantic Records in 2006. Upon hearing Mars perform with his guitar, Bay-Schuck wanted to sign him with their label immediately, however it took about three years before they were able to sign Mars into the label since Mars felt like it is too early and he needed to hone his talent a little more. However the said deal did not give him the career as a solo artist and he continued writing songs with Lawrence.
In 2008, Brandon Creed of Menudo called their team to ask for a reunion song for their group and he liked the song Lost written by Mars. They initially did not want to give the song away however Creed offered them $20,000 for the song which they gladly accepted. With the sale of the song, Mars and Lawrence were able to continue working and they decided to write and produce songs together. Before becoming a successful artist, Mars was acknowledged as music producer and song writer. He wrote songs for numerous artists including Adam Levine, Brandy, Sean Kingston, Alexandra Burke and Flo Rida.
Mars was then introduced to American rapper Travie McCoy's and he wrote One at a Time for him for a charity single used for the MTV's Staying Alive foundation. McCoy liked him and they eventually did a collab with the songs Nothin' on You and Billionaire which eventually gave Mars the push he needed to jumpstart his career as a solo artist. The songs became a massive hit and reached the top 10 of numerous music charts worldwide. That same year, Mars released his debut EP called It's Better If You Don't Understand which peaked at the top 99 on the US Billboard 200. He became popular worldwide when he released the song Just the Way You Are which is the lead single in his debut studio album called Doo-Wops & Hooligans. His album debuted at top 3 on the Billboard 200 and even sold about 15.5 million copies worldwide. It also featured two more hit songs for Mars such as Grenade and The Lazy Song.
