‘Doctor Strange 2’ Pulls Off Sensational $90 Million Opening Day
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is on track to score a $185 million opening weekend at the box office over the weekend, landing one of the biggest openings of all time. The Marvel Studios and Disney superhero flick reportedly grossed $90 million with Friday’s debut.
Friday’s haul for the film—which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange—is the seventh-largest opening day of all time. With Doctor Strange 2, the Marvel Cinematic Universe now has five films on the list of top 10 biggest openings ever.
Not only that, but the film's Friday numbers are bigger than the entire opening weekend of 10 other MCU titles, including the first Doctor Strange, which had an $85.1 million opening in 2016.
The movie’s success is a huge boon to Hollywood and theater owners who have endured two years of struggle caused by the pandemic. In total, the film debuted in 4,534 theaters, making it the seventh-widest opening footprint ever.
Originally, the flick was to be directed by Scott Derrickson—who directed the original—but due to creative differences, he dropped out during pre-production. Sam Raim, whose last foray into the MCU was Sony’s first three Spider-Man films in the 2000s, was brought on board shortly after.
The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the direction Raimi took the franchise.
In a new interview with the National Post, Cumberbatch said he is keen to keep playing the titular character for at least another ten years.
"Yeah! Absolutely. Absolutely. If they keep me, and it interesting, and keep him evolving and try to exercise his full potential as a character, I think there's a lot of places for him to explore," Cumberbatch admitted. "So yeah, bring it on."
“I’m going to have a break,” he added with a laugh.
While it’s been six years since the original film was released, Cumberbatch has appeared as Doctor Strange in a sleuth of MCU flicks. He had cameos in Thor: Ragnarök and Avengers: Endgame, while his character had more significant roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
