Mark Ruffalo & HBO Sued For Millions After Show Causes NYC Fire

Mark Ruffalo and HBO are at the center of a lawsuit that was filed following a fire that broke out on the set of a show that was filming in a New York neighbourhood.

According to TMZ, the fire occurred in May 2019 when filming for the miniseries I Know This Much is True at a car dealership in upstate New York. It’s unclear how the fire started but it reportedly left damages in the millions that have yet to be addressed.

Court documents reveal that little has been done to clean up the remnant left behind from the blaze. As a result, locals claim they’re being regularly exposed to dangerous toxins and carcinogens.

In addition, the lawsuit claims significant damage was caused to local homes due to the fire.

Mark is being named in the lawsuit because he was an executive producer on the show in addition to starring in a leading role. As executive producer, he was responsible for ensuring safety standards were met on set. However, the lawsuit alleges that kerosene, heating oil, and other flammable products were stored at the filming location, which contributed to the fire.

Due to the physical and emotional turmoil the neighbours allege they’ve experienced, the lawsuit is seeking millions in damages, TMZ notes, though an exact number has yet to be specified.

When the fire was first reported by the media, the extent of damage was already apparent. At the time, USA Today reported that a variety of film equipment as well as 20 vintage cars used during filming were lost. Luckily, there were no injuries.

"There's nothing left," Chris Busby, the general manager of the 612 Automotive Group dealership, told the media. "It's a huge loss for us and HBO. They are just as heartbroken over this as we are."

HBO temporarily suspended production on I Know This Much Is True, though it still went on to release the following year.

I Know This Much Is True follows two identical twin brothers (both played by Mark Ruffalo) as they navigate the turmoil of their adult lives. It’s based on the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb of the same name.

I cannot tell you how much I love this book. It was so deeply moving and personal to me in so many ways,” Mark said of taking on the role. “Culturally we are more ready to deal with this material in this manner than ever before. This will happen. I can all but guarantee it.”

So far, neither HBO nor Mark have commented on the lawsuit.
