J. Cole's humble beginnings and hard work has helped him rise to the top, all while remaining to be most authentic rapper in the industry. American hip hop recording artist, songwriter and record producer J. Cole has impressively amassed an estimated of $60 million. He was the first artist that was signed under the label of Jay Z called Roc Nation. He is among the highest paid rappers in the world and typically earns at least $30 million yearly. J. Cole whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole was born on January 28, 1985 at the American military base located in Frankfurt, West Germany. His father served the U.S. Army and is an African American veteran while his mother is European American who used to work as a postal worker in the United States Postal Service. During Cole’s youth, they were abandoned by his father and her mom decided to move to Fayetteville, North Carolina together with him and his older brother. Cole grew up in a multiethnic environment which is probably the reason why his ethnicity does not really impacts him.

Cole believes that he identifies with white people because he grew up with his mother and her side of the family who he dearly treasures. Although he feels that way, at the end of the day, he feels that he never felt white. He added that he can identify himself with white people but can never feel to be one of them. During his youth, Cole has developed interest for music and basketball. His interest in music resulted in him being the first-chair violinist in 2003 for the Terry Sanford Orchestra.

When Cole graduated high school, he had a GPA of 4.2. He then decided to move to New York City since he wants to pursue music and he knows that he had more opportunities in the city. He moved to New York with an scholarship from the St. John's University. He initially took up computer science but later transferred to communication and business department. He was a bright student and even graduated magna cum laude in 2007 with a GPA of 3.8.

Cole was musically inspired by Nas, Tupac, Eminem and Canibus. Together with his cousin, he worked on developing some basic understanding of wordplay and rhyming. He also started to learn how to interpolate some storytelling within the lyrics. By the time Cole was 14, he has numerous notebooks which is filled with song ideas however he was not able to produce beats further than samples. Cole has started rapping when he reached the age of twelve and eventually saw it as an ideal profession when his mother bought a ASR-X musical sampler for him as a gift for Christmas. Due to this instrument, his production skills has improved and later started initial production with the pseudonym Therapist.

He expanded his production in order to create an entire CD of instrumentals and then traveled to Roc the Mic Studio hoping to let Jay Z hear his creation while he was in the recording sessions for American Gangster. Cole waited for three hours and when he saw record executive Jay Z, he just dismissed him. He then later used the CD as his debut mixtape titled The Come Up. Although his first mixtape was well received, he was not able to secure a record deal from it.

Everything changed for J. Cole when he produced his second mixed tape titled The Warm Up. Before the second mixed tape was released, Jay Z heard the track titled Lights Please and that is when things started to get brighter. J. Cole got a message from Jay Z asking for a meet up in November 2008. He was signed under Jay Z’s Roc Nation after the meeting. Everything went well and Cole has mentioned numerous times that Jay Z has mentored him and was the reason for his success. The second mix tape was released on June 15, 2009 which gained positive reviews. He was also featured on American rapper Jay Z’s album titled The Blueprint 3 on the track titled A Star Is Born released on the same year.

Cole was starting to make a name for himself and he collaborated with numerous artists to further make a name for himself. One of his famous collaboration was Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek's single Just Begun, collaboration with labelmates Mos Def, and Jay Electronica. He also appeared on the song Gladiators by B.o.B. His fame skyrocketed when he released his third mix tape titled Friday Night Lights and went on to tour with Drake as an opening act. Cole’s debut studio album titled Cole World: The Sideline Story was released in 2011 and reached the Billboard 200.

Since then, his releases always climb the top of the charts. His second and third album Born Sinner and Forest Hills Drive respectively both reached #1 on three charts such as US Rap, US R&B/Hip-Hop charts and Billboard 200. He went on to release more singles and albums over the course of his career. He won his first ever Grammy Award for the Best Rap Song for the song A Lot which is a collaboration with 21 Savage. Today, he is one of the highest paid rappers across the world and consistently earn $30 million annually.
