'Holy Grail' LeBron James Card Expected To Fetch $6 million At Auction
A one-of-a-kind LeBron James trading card is headed to auction this month, and auctioneers in New York are speculating that the collectible could fetch a jaw-dropping $6 million when it hits the block. The card, dubbed the “Triple Logoman,” features game-used patches from each of the NBA teams that James has played with — and it could break the record for the most expensive sports card ever sold.
"The card is a one-of-one, is completely unique and experts think it could challenge the all-time record paid for any trading card," Ken Goldin, executive chairman and founder of Goldin Auctions, told CNN.
While sports cards may not be as lucrative as their Pokémon counterparts in recent years, bidding for Triple Logoman is still set to start at a whopping $500,000. Goldin thinks that the rare collectible has a shot at breaking the current $6.6 million record set by the sale of a Honus Wagner T206 baseball card last year.
His reasoning is simple: There are about 50 Honus Wagner cards in existence, but only one LeBron James Triple Logoman.
What makes this card unique is the game-used patches that adorn it, one for each NBA team that James has played for: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. Panini, the company that issued the card, created five Triple Logomans as part of its 2020-2021 Flawless collection. However, this card is the only one featuring patches from a single player.
The Triple Logoman card was found after a long hunt that enchanted collectors. Even Drake got caught up in the search — purchasing 10 cases of cards — but the rapper was ultimately unsuccessful.
“The LeBron James Triple Logoman card is the undisputed holy grail of modern cards,” Goldin said in a statement. “For months, collectors have clamored to claim this uniquely alluring masterpiece and for card collectors, there have been a small handful of cards that are considered the pièce de résistance of the hobby.”
If the card manages to sell for more than $1 million, it won’t be the first time one of James’ cards has done so. In July 2020, a card from his 2003-04 rookie season with the Cavaliers pulled in $1.8 million. A similar card sold in April 2021 for $5.2 million, according to CNN.
