Johnny Challenges Amber’s $2 Million Countersuit Win After She Appeals Verdict

Amber Heard is trying every avenue to overturn the million-dollar verdict in favor of Johnny Depp following their explosive defamation case. However, Johnny is now challenging the $2 million she won for her countersuit, proving that he’s not backing down from their feud either.

Earlier this month, Amber’s request for a mistrial was denied. The actress’s legal team took issue that the birthdate of one of the jurors was incorrect. However, the judge ruled that Amber’s lawyers provided “no evidence of fraud or wrongdoing.”

"[Amber Heard] knew or should have known about the mistake at any time during the seven-week pendency of this trial […] [and] had every opportunity to object,” the judge ruled.

Since then, Amber and her attorneys have filed another appeal, but this time to overturn the verdict.

"We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment,” a spokesperson for Amber told TMZ. “We are therefore appealing the verdict. While we realize today's filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice."

Johnny’s legal team also responded but seemed unconcerned with Amber’s latest move.

"The jury listened to the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and came to a clear and unanimous verdict that the defendant herself defamed Mr. Depp in multiple instances,” his representative stated. “We remain confident in our case and that this verdict will stand.”

Now, sources say that Johnny decided to appeal the $2 million Amber won for her countersuit since she's persistent in trying to overturn the jury’s decision. "If Ms. Heard is determined to pursue further litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr. Depp is filing a concurrent appeal to ensure that the full record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal,” a source told PEOPLE.

The insider added that the Pirates of the Caribbean star feels the verdict was “overwhelming positive,” and "believes that this is a time for both parties to move on with their lives and heal."

Court documents reveal that Johnny has officially appealed the countersuit win.

Johnny was originally awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages after his ex-wife was found guilty of defaming him in a 2018 op-ed. The Aquaman actress was subsequently awarded $2 million for her countersuit after Johnny’s lawyer was found guilty of defaming her.

Due to a Virginia statue capping compensatory damages, Amber was only ordered to pay $10.3 million (though her team has said she can't afford it). It was also reported Amber will have to pay a higher cost if she chooses to appeal but loses.

Additionally, her insurance provider has confirmed they won’t be covering any of the damages.
