Kanye Is Being Sued For $7 Million Over Cancelled Coachella Performance
After a series of controversial behavior (including posting an animated video burying Pete Davidson alive), it wasn’t surprising when Kanye West pulled out of performing at Coachella earlier this year. But, the rapper is now facing a multi-million lawsuit over the failed festival performance.
According to TMZ, Phantom Labs is suing Kanye for $7 million over unpaid services they provided him between June 2021 to March 2022.
Phantom Labs said they worked on a number of large-scale projects for the Yeezy founder over almost a year. This included helping coordinate his listening event for his album Donda 2, which was released earlier this year exclusively for the Stem Player.
They also helped organize four weeks of his Sunday Service as well as his “Free Larry Hoover” show that featured Drake.
Perhaps the most expensive project they helped Kanye with, however, was his upcoming 2022 Coachella performance, which he ultimately bowed out of in April, less than two weeks before the event.
Though Kanye didn’t release a statement revealing why he cancelled the performance, he previously threatened to do so if fellow headliner Billie Eilish didn’t apologize to Travis Scott over her comments about his fatal Astroworld festival (which she didn’t).
At the same time, a petition was launched on Change.org calling for Coachella to cancel Kanye’s performance amid his controversial behavior, which included calling his ex-wife Kim Kardashian out on social media on multiple occasions.
“We have watched Kanye harass, manipulate and hurt Kim, Pete, and others for over a year now,” it said. “Coachella (along with other brand names that are still working with him) should be ashamed of themselves and should not be giving him any more of a platform.”
However, cancelling Coachella appears to have put the rapper in a financial bind.
In court documents, Phantom Labs claims Kanye owed them $6 million in unpaid services by February 2022. But he claimed he was going to use his $9 million performance fee from Coachella to settle the bills.
Moreover, the production company says they were hit with a $1.2 million fee related to Kanye’s decision o back out of the festival, which they say he’s showed no intention of paying them back for.
Now, Phantom Labs is suing the rapper for breach of contract and is seeking at least $7.1 million to cover what the say he owes them.
Kanye – who’s worth an estimated $2 billion – hasn’t publicly responded to the lawsuit so far.
