Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling Got The Same Pay For ‘Barbie’

With the pay gap alive and well in Hollywood, it’s not often we hear of leading males and females earning the same wage in movies. But the Barbie film is setting a standard, as leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are getting equal pay.

According to Yahoo! Finance, both actors are being paid $12.5 million for their role.

This is higher than Margot has gotten for other huge roles. She was paid between $9 to $10 million to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, a sequel to Suicide Squad. She previously earned $347,000 to star as Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife in Wolf Walk Street, a role that was considered breakthrough for her career.

Conversely, Ryan has earned almost double for other roles in the not-so-recent past. The actor is starring alongside Chris Evans in the new Netflix movie The Gray Man, and both stars earned a reported $20 million each for the roles.

Even though Margot and Ryan’s paychecks are equitable for Barbie, some critics suggest she should’ve been paid more since she’s the titular character in the live action movie.

“Obviously, something that you love to see. You love to see equity when it comes to pay,” Yahoo’s Finance’s Rachelle Akuffo said in a video discussion on the topic. “But I'm not sure how I feel about this. I mean, she is playing Barbie,” she added. “You would think she would get a little bit more, but I mean, I don't know.”

Her co-host, Dave Briggs, suggested the equal pay was fair given that Ryan is the bigger star and tends to earn more for his role.

Barbie is currently being filmed, and brightly colored images of the cast have gone viral on the Internet (including Ryan with a fresh bleach-blonde hair ‘do). The film is inspired by the doll of the same name is and set to release sometime next year.

The film has been in production for years. It was first announced in 2014 with Amy Schumer as the lead. However, the comedian had to pull out due to creative conflicts and scheduling problems.

For a time, it was rumored Anne Hathaway was in consideration for the role. However, after years of speculation, Margot was cast as the lead in 2019.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids,” she told Variety of the coveted role.

So far, no cast members have commented on the salary revelation.
