Elon Musk Announces He’s Buying Manchester United
Elon Musk recently backed out of buying Twitter, but it looks like he’s eying a new purchase – Manchester United, to be specific.
On Tuesday, the world’s richest person turned to Twitter to express interest in the sports team. “I’m buying Manchester United,” he shared with his 103 million followers. “Ur welcome.”
The tweet immediately gained traction, with over 120,000 retweeting the statement. Elon often uses his Twitter account to make big announcements, including when he tried to buy the social media site.
However, after he tweet sent the Internet into a frenzy, Elon tweeted again to say he was only kidding.
“Are you serious?” the Twitter account for Tesla Owners Silicon Valley asked him. “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter,” Elon replied. “I’m not buying any sports teams.”
With a reported net worth of $268 billion, buying Manchester United would only make a small dent in his personal fortune. The soccer team is reportedly worth $4 billion, though it’s not up for sale.
In fact, Elon could buy an assortment of sports teams and still have a billion-dollar fortune left to his name. According to the Indian Express, the SpaceX founder could buy the top 50 most expensive sports teams in the world and be left with a $107 billion net worth.
Elon may not make any huge purchases in the near future given his ongoing legal issues with Twitter. In July, it was revealed Twitter is suing him after he backed out of their $44 billion deal. The social media platform argues Elon changed his mind when both his net worth and Twitter’s value dropped due to the stock market.
However, Elon’s team has submitted a regulatory filing arguing he was “mislead” by Twitter, which he claims mispresents the number of spam accounts across its platform. “Twitter is in material breach of multiple provisions […] [and] appears to have made false and misleading representations,” the filing argues.
The dispute remains ongoing.
Elon is also reportedly undertaking another huge project – constructing his own personal airport. Earlier this month, it was reported the billionaire is planning to build an airport near Austin, Texas. He plans to use the space for personal use as well as his businesses, including Tesla, SpaceX, and The Boring Company.
The news of Elon’s airport comes after the businessman was criticized for his excessive jet fuel usage, largely due to a series of 5-minute trips that would’ve taken only slightly longer by car.
