The 8 Highest Grossing Re-Released Movies, Ranked | TheRichest

Our favorite films (and maybe some of the flops) from time to time are re-released to theaters for a variety of reasons. Perhaps a social media following after a short and unsuccessful trip to the big screen causes the studio to re-release in an attempt to cash in on the new found popularity. More likely, such as the case of James Cameron’s Avatar, the film goes back to theaters shortly before his long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water releases on Dec. 16.

Of course, classics find their way back to theaters for a second go around when their popularity is timeless and classic, such as The Wizard of Oz or Dirty Dancing. They typically appear in select theaters and only run for a weekend but audiences flock to see their favorites in the comfort of the movie theater.

Regardless of the reason, re-releases can be a financial boost for the studio and remind audiences why the film was memorable. Total numbers reflected can vary, based on how long the film appeared in theaters and how many locations had the film available.
