Nick Carter’s Career Takes A Nosedive Amid Sex Assault Lawsuit
A sexual assault lawsuit was just launched against Nick Carter, but it’s already having an impact on his career.
According to PEOPLE, the lawsuit was filed by Shannon Ruth, a woman with cerebral palsy and autism, who claims he assaulted her on his tour bus following a concert in 2001. She would’ve been 17 at the time, while Nick was 21.
She claims he gave her a red-colored drink that he called “VIP juice,” and said it was just cranberry juice. But she says she believes he spiked it with alcohol. Shannon claims that Nick went on to sexually assault her, take her virginity, and pass on HPV to her.
Nick is denying the allegations. His attorney made a statement to the publication, calling Shannon’s claims fictitious.
"This claim about an incident that supposedly took place more than 20 years ago is not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue,” attorney Michael Holtz said.
"Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick — and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time,” he continued. “No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer — there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize."
Nevertheless, ABC decided to cancel the Backstreet Boys Christmas special in light of the ongoing lawsuit.
Nick was supposed to reunite with his bandmates to sing hits from their 10-year-old album A Very Backstreet Christmas. Numerous celebrities like Meghan Trainor and Seth Rogen were scheduled to make an appearance.
However, Nick has returned to the stage since the lawsuit was filed. He joined the Backstreet Boys at the Z100’s 2022 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in New York on December 9th. It’s unclear how the lawsuit will continue to affect Nick’s career moving forward.
However, this isn’t the first time he’s been accused of sexual assault. He faced similar allegations in 2017 when pop star Melissa Shuman claimed he assaulted her when she was 18 and he was 22.
Nick denied it was assault and called their previous encounter consensual. The Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to prosecute the case the following year since the statute of limitations had been reached.
The Carter family was in the headlines earlier this year following the death of Nick’s younger brother, Aaron Carter. There were reports the family was fighting over the late singer’s estate, though it appears it will now go to his infant son uncontested.
