Born in Culver City, California, Hunt is the daughter of Jane Elizabeth and Gordon Hunt, a talented film, voice, and stage director. Making a career in the entertainment industry seemed almost inevitable for Hunt as her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Fries, was a voice coach, further adding to her exposure to the world of performance. When she was just three years old, Hunt's family relocated to New York City, where her father directed theatre productions and introduced her to the magical world of plays. Despite her father's influence, Hunt's passion for acting didn't take root until later in life.

She studied ballet and briefly attended the University of California, Los Angeles but it wasn't until she started landing roles in television shows and films that she fully realized her potential. In 1994, she began dating actor Hank Azaria but the relationship was short-lived and the couple divorced just 17 months after getting married in 1999. In 2001, Hunt started a relationship with producer Matthew Carnahan, and the couple welcomed a daughter in 2004. However, their relationship also came to an end in August 2017. Despite that, Hunt's career has continued to soar, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
