How Katey Sagal Became A Big Name In Hollywood | TheRichest
Though we’ve seen actress Katey Sagal make an appearance in a variety of television shows, most recall her turn as Peg Bundy in the hit 1980’s series Married…with Children. With a red bouffant, tight fitting clothes and high heels, the Bundy matriarch became a household name. What might surprise you, is Sagal’s lengthy career as both an actress and musician, her ties to some of Hollywood’s elite and ups and downs over the years.
Here’s how Katey Sagal became a recognizable powerhouse in entertainment.
8 A Hollywood Bound Family
Sagal was born in Los Angeles, CA, to a mother who was a singer, producer and television writer and a Ukrainian father who worked as a director in Hollywood. The parents of four children, according to Celebrity Net Worth, died at an early age. Her mother passed away from heart disease and her father, tragically died in an accident on a movie set. By her early 20’s, Sagal was on her own.
7 Becoming Peg Bundy
After an on-screen debut in television icon Mary Tyler Moore’s sitcom Mary, as a newspaper columnist she caught the attention of directors creating Married…with Children. Alongside Ed O’Neill, Christina Applegate and David Faustino, the show ran for more than a decade and created a fan base for the Bundy family for decades to come. Sagal played the lazy, free-spending wife of Al Bundy (O’Neill) in the comedy and audiences loved her over the top rendition of a woman in a lower-class family.
6 The Sons of Anarchy Days and Everything in Between
Sagal lent her voice to characters on the animated television hits Recess and Futurama and she guest starred on popular shows from Dead to Me to The Big Bang Theory. However, it was her stint on 8 Simple Rules starring John Ritter and Kaley Cuoco that reminded fans of her star power and the show became an instant hit, but ended quickly after Ritter’s untimely passing.
From 2008 to 2014, Sagal starred as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, created by her current husband, Kurt Sutter. The tattooed, rough and brave character in some ways, was a throwback to the Peg Bundy days. Since 2019, she’s played the recurring role of Louise, Dan Conner’s (John Goodman) love interest on The Conners and continues to guest star on other programs.
5 Singing Career
In addition to a stellar television career, it just so happens that Sagal also has an impressive set of pipes. According to Ranker, prior to becoming a star, Sagal was working as a singing waitress. It was there she landed her first record deal working alongside the now famous composer Danny Elfman.
As early as the 70’s she was singing backup for the likes of Bob Dylan, Bette Midler and the legendary Etta James. Sagal has dropped two solo albums, “Well…” in 1994 and “Room” in 2004. Fans can also find her musical contributions on the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack.
4 Family Life
As a teenager, Sagal had an on and off again decades long relationship with KISS front man Gene Simmons. She’s also been married three times, most notably, to Rick Springfield’s drummer Jack White, the father of two of her children and current husband Kurt Sutter with whom she shares a daughter.
Several of her siblings share the family legacy of working within Hollywood. Jean Sagal has appeared in Knots Landing, 21 Jump Street and Picket Fences. She and her twin sister Liz also served as the Doublemint Twins for the popular ad campaign. Liz has worked as a writer for the Paul Riser sitcom Mad About You and Charmed. The women’s brother wrote, produced and acted in the first film officially acquired by Amazon, Elvis & Nixon.
3 The Downside Of Her Celebrity Status
According to People, Sagal revealed a 15-year battle with drug addiction, spawning somewhat from her experience as a child. She and best friend, Lorna Luft, the daughter of famed icon Judy Garland were used to moms with pills laying around the house and sleeping till noon. A fact of life that she says, opened the door to a struggle with various addictions over the years, however she’s now been sober for decades.
In 2021, she was the victim in an accident which involved being hit by a car while crossing the road at the crosswalk when a driver didn’t see her. Saga was taken by ambulance to an L.A. Hospital but made a full recovery.
2 Writing Her Memoir
In Sagal’s 2017 memoir, “Grace Notes: My Recollections”, she talks about her struggle with drug abuse, her relationship with Simmons and attending college with classmates David Hasselhoff and Paul Reubens of Pee Wee Herman fame.
She talks about being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 28 and suffering the stillbirth of her first daughter, Ruby. Sagal leaves it all on the table in the novel detailing the ups and downs of life in Hollywood and how she’s risen to the top after facing obstacles and pain.
1 Awards And Recognition
For her work on Sons of Anarchy, Sagal took home a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama. She was nominated for four other awards for her turn in Anarchy as well. Though she never received an award for her role in Married…with Children, Sagal did receive many nominations between 1989 to 1994, a sure sign that she was recognized and appreciated. She won a Prism award for her work on 8 Simple Rules and Sons of Anarchy.
