Travis Scott’s Pyramid Concert Cancelled After He Causes Controversy In Egypt
Travis Scott is losing more money after another one of his shows was cancelled, this time in Egypt. The rapper was set to perform at the Pyramids of Giza, one of the 7 wonders of the world. But only 2 days before ethe show, Live Nation announced the event was cancelled.
“We regret to inform you that the UTOPIA show, originally scheduled for July 28th at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, is cancelled,” the statement read.
“Unfortunately, despite highest efforts, complex production issues meant that the show could not be constructed in the desert,” it continued.
The statement went on to say that all ticket holder would get a refund from their point of purchase.
While Live Nation is blaming production issues, there’s speculation that Travis’ controversial reputation led to the event organizers canceling the concert altogether. The Egyptian Musicians Syndicate – which regulates the music industry in Egypt – released a statement expressing concerns over safety as well as the content of Travis’ music.
“Since the General Syndicate is part of the fabric of this beloved country it is keen on its stability and refuses to tamper with societal values and Egyptian and Arab customs,” the Syndicate said in a statement.
“Based on research and documented information about strange rituals at Travis’s concerts that are inconsistent with our authentic societal values and traditions, the Board of Directors has decided to cancel the license issued to hold this type of concert that contradicts the cultural identity of the Egyptian people,” it continued.
Days after Travis’ concert was cancelled, the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate established new measures for foreign singers.
The official spokesperson for the organization, Mohamed Abdullah, explained, “[The syndicate] issued a decision to set a budget for hiring new youth who will provide an information technology unit for concerts to contract international singers. This unit will bring together young university graduates who speak many languages to search and scrutinize any foreign artist.”
This isn’t the first concert Travis has cancelled in the wake of 2021’s Astroworld tragedy, where 10 people died and hundred were injured when the crowd surged during Travis’ set.
The rapper is still facing $10 billion in combined lawsuits over the fatal event.
It’s not clear how much Travis will be losing now that his Egyptian concert is cancelled. Some reports say he can make up to $1.8 million per show, but this may be fluctuating in the wake of his controversial past.
