Taylor Swift's $12K Ring Broke At The VMAs | TheRichest.com
Taylor Swift attended MTV's VMAs in September, and made the news for something other than her record-breaking Eras tour.
"Something borrowed" isn't just for weddings -- a-listers like Taylor are "loaned" couture gowns and sparkling baubles by designers and jewelry makers. The practice is so routine that BuzzFeed once published a listicle about celebrities supplying their own red carpet ensembles in lieu of borrowing clothes and accessories.
Not only do designers and jewelers loan out their expensive wares, Taylor Swift and other celebrities are often paid to appear in fancy frocks:
"For designers, the red carpet is one of the most visible and buzzed-about ways to promote their brands. In fact, some top designers will pay A-list actresses and musicians big bucks to wear their dress or jewelry — between $100,000 and $250,000 depending on the star power of the celebrity."
In March 2023, British fashion glossy magazine Marie Claire interviewed jeweler Martin Katz, citing Katz's three decades supplying sparkling diamonds to those who walk the red carpet. Katz recalled a similar incident involving Minnie Driver:
"I will never forget though the year when Minnie Driver wore a multi-strand ruby of mine to the Oscars and unfortunately it became attached to her dress, causing the clasps to break and the ruby beads to dissipate across the floor of the auditorium. James Cameron was seen on his hands and knees helping to pick up the rubies for the distraught Ms. Driver. There’s never a dull moment at the Oscars!”
As for Taylor's $12,000 ring, a popular tweet captured the moment it appeared to fall apart:
E! News identified Taylor's ring as a "Van Cleef and Arpels 'onyx and diamond ring,' provided to her by Joseph Saidian & Sons." Joseph Saidian & Sons initially posted to Instagram about Taylor Swift and the VMAs:
"#Swiftiesunite as #TAYLORSWIFT wins her award at the #VMAs tonight wearing a few of our vintage gold and diamond necklaces and a vintage #VCA onyx ring!!!"
The jeweler later shared a still image of Taylor's surprised face and the broken ring, adding they were "still forever Swifties!" On September 14th, they confirmed that the ring was broken, and told ET Online:
"We just got the ring back a few minutes ago. I can exclusively tell ET that this ring will easily and quickly be fixed! We are proud to have a ring for sale that will now always be associated with a legendary artist and a historic night."
Although Taylor Swift's $12,000 ring broke at the VMAs, it wasn't a disaster for anyone involved. Taylor had merely borrowed the ring, and the jeweler who lent it reaped incalculable amounts of free publicity in the form of viral tweets and extensive news coverage.
