Rory's axe game did not start on the Game of thrones in his role as a fighter. His skills date back to his life before debuting in film. He is a professional lumberjack, qualified to wield the axe.

He quit smoking and drinking and even frequented the gym. After weeks of eating boiled eggs and chicken, the scene got cut due to the wintery conditions on set, which made it unrealistic to be topless. Immediately after shooting the scene, McCann went to drown his disappointment in drinking all that he had been missing.
