NFL Television Ratings Increase By Five Percent In 2019

For several years, and due to a variety of reasons, the NFL experienced a noticeable decline in television ratings.

One year ago, the NFL saw a five percent increase in TV ratings for the 2018 season - a nice bounce back after seeing a 9.7 percent decrease for 2017. The good news for the league office is that the trend continued upwards in 2019.

According to Austin Karp of the Sports Business Journal, the NFL saw another five percent increase in television ratings for the 2019 regular season. Karp noted the successful numbers for all four networks - Fox, ESPN, NBC and CBS.

Numerous factors surely played a big part in having the NFL experience stronger ratings this year. Obviously, it was thanks in large part to the emergence of young superstars like MVP favorite Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, plus the continued dominance of Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, among others.

The Dallas Cowboys' Week 12 showdown against the New England Patriots - a clash between two of the league's big market teams - netted over 30 million viewers alone. It was the best rating for a regular season game on Fox Sports in 23 years.

Other marquee showdowns saw the Chiefs defeat the Patriots in Week 14, a rematch of last year's thrilling AFC Championship Game between the two clubs, plus the Week 13 showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, the league's top two teams during the regular season .

It's worth noting that Week 1 alone brought in over 109 million viewers. That was led by the New York Giants' showdown with the Dallas Cowboys, which netted 23.9 million viewers.

There's obviously plenty of work for the NFL to do going forward. The officiating controversies can't be ignored, and there are still too many on and off-the-field that remain concerning. But from a business standpoint, the league office and all 32 teams will be pleased about a big jump in ratings.
