Forbes Reveals NBA Valuations List, Knicks Retain Top Spot

Forbes released its annual rankings of NBA team valuations, and the New York Knicks claimed the top spot yet again.
The Knicks, owned by the Madison Square Garden company that's led by James L. Dolan, were listed at $4.6 billion, barely holding off the Los Angeles Lakers ($4.4 billion) for the No. 1 spot.
Dolan's team saw a 15 percent increase in value over the past year, with a revenue of $472 million and an operating income of $157 million. The Lakers saw a bigger increase at 19 percent, with a $434 million revenue and a $178 million operating income.
The Knicks have held the top spot every year since 2016. In 2015, the Lakers were ranked ahead of the Knicks, who owned the No. 1 spot in 2014. Both teams have struggled on the court over the past seven years, but the Lakers have enjoyed a renaissance under LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The dynastic Golden State Warriors were third on Forbes' 2020 list ($4.3 billion) with a massive 23 percent increase. The Chicago Bulls ($3.2 billion) and Boston Celtics ($3.1 billion) rounded out the top five.

No team saw a bigger valuation increase than the defending champion Toronto Raptors, who saw a 25 percent increase. They climbed the top 10 with a value of $2.1 billion, after being listed at $1.7 billion last year.
The rest of the top 10 consisted of the Los Angeles Clippers ($2.6 billion), Brooklyn Nets ($2.5 billion), Houston Rockets ($2.475 billion) and Dallas Mavericks ($2.4 billion). The Memphis Grizzlies were ranked as the least valuable team at $1.3 billion, and the New Orleans Pelicans were 29th at $1.35 billion.
Regardless of how teams perform on the court, a team's value simply comes down to the market they play in. New York -- often regarded as the media capital of the world -- and Los Angeles are the two biggest markets in the United States. It's going to be a long time until either of these teams are moved out of the top two on Forbes' list.
