Super Bowl LIV Audience Reportedly Hit 135-140 Million

It was initially reported that the Kansas City Chiefs' 31-20 victory in Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers averaged 102 million viewers.
That made it the 10th-most watched Super Bowl in history, as 24-year-old phenom Patrick Mahomes pulled off some fourth quarter magic to lead Kansas City to its second Lombardi Trophy.
John Ourand of Sports Business Journal (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk) is reporting that the Super Bowl LIV audience was in the 135-140 million range. Attendance for the game in Miami was reported to be 62,417.
Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 1, 2015 remains the most watched Super Bowl ever, at over 114.4 million, via Frank Pallotta of CNN Business.
Viewership for the Super Bowl declined every year from Super Bowl 50 (2016) to Super Bowl LII (2019). Last year's Super Bowl between the Patriots and Los Angeles Rams was at 100.7 million -- even though it featured a big market franchise (the Rams) as well as one of America's most beloved teams (the Patriots).

The 2019 NFL regular season saw a five percent increase in television ratings. The numbers went down in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but the ratings have now increased in each of the last two years.
It's not much of a surprise that Super Bowl LIV ratings saw a nice jump in 2020. Though the Patriots have an extremely large fanbase across the country, it's safe to guess that the non-Patriots fans were growing tired of them in the Super Bowl. New England made it three years in a row from the 2016 to the 2018 seasons, and five times in the 2010s alone.
The 49ers, like the Patriots, have a rich history as well as one of the largest followings in the United States. The Chiefs have garnered a bigger following under Mahomes, who has emerged as the new face of the NFL. These two teams will be competing for more Super Bowls down the road, and you can bet they'll play a huge part in helping the increase of NFL ratings.
