Brian Hoyer Returns To Patriots On One-Year, $1.05 Million Contract

After losing franchise icon and starting quarterback Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, the New England Patriots are reuniting with an old friend.
On Sunday, Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reported that the Patriots signed former Brady backup Brian Hoyer and linebacker Brandon Copeland. Hoyer was a second stringer for the Indianapolis Colts last season, but he was recently released.
ESPN's Adam Schefter added that it's a one-year deal for Hoyer worth $1.05 million. In all, he'll take home $2 million guaranteed with the Patriots and Colts.
Barring any big moves by Bill Belichick, it looks like the Patriots will have Hoyer, veteran Cody Kessler and sophomore Jarrett Stidham compete for the starting job in 2020. This is the first time in the Belichick era where the Patriots have uncertainty at quarterback in the offseason.
An undrafted product out of Michigan State, Hoyer was Brady's backup from 2009 to 2011, before moving on to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The journeyman signal-caller was a starter for the Cleveland Browns and the Houston Texans in 2014 and 2015, respectively. He helped the Texans win the AFC South that year, though they were ousted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round.
Hoyer returned to New England as a backup in the midst of the 2017 season, after the Patriots traded backup Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers. Coincidentally, San Francisco had released Hoyer after acquiring Garoppolo.

The 34-year-old won a Super Bowl LIII championship ring as Brady's understudy last season. Hoyer only attempted two passes in garbage time last season.
He joined the Indianapolis Colts in 2019, backing up Jacoby Brissett - who was a backup for Brady and the Patriots in the 2016 season. Hoyer had 372 passing yards, four touchdowns and as many interceptions in four game appearances.
But for the first time in his career, in his third go-around in Foxbourgh, Hoyer gets the chance to be the starter for the Patriots. We'll see how this all plays out.
