McDonald's To Close All Of Its UK Restaurants By The End Of Today

As more extreme measures are taken around the world to stem the spread of COVID-19, McDonald's has announced it will close all of its UK restaurants.
The coronavirus has taken over the world and pretty much wherever you read this from, life is currently very different to the way that it was a week ago. Chances are it will never be the same again. As more and more places are forced to close, which haven't had enough business to warrant staying open anyway, there's a strong chance that many of them will go under, depending on how long this pandemic drags on for.
The hospitality industry, in particular, has already been hit extremely hard and things will only get worse. People have been rightly heeding government advice to stay at home unless it's absolutely necessary to leave the house. Then last Friday in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed all pubs and restaurants were being forced to close, other than for takeaway and delivery.
That last caveat will have been a lifesaver for some. Some businesses who previously didn't offer delivery will be doing so now just as a way to make money. Others who already did will have opened up their catchment area since no one is coming to them. As for McDonald's, which has a staggering 1270 locations in the UK and employs more than 130,000 people, the global franchise has decided to take things a step further.
The head of McDonald's UK Paul Pomroy issued a statement on Sunday revealing that all of the company's British locations will be closing by 7 pm on Monday, March 23, 2020, at the latest. No takeaways, no deliveries via Uber Eats, a complete closure of every single restaurant. "Over the last 24 hours, it has become clear that maintaining safe social distancing whilst operating busy takeaway and Drive Thru restaurants is increasingly difficult," the statement reads.
McDonald's staff have obviously been left pretty worried by the announcement. However, the franchise has promised to pay all of its staff through April 5, 2020, reports BBC. The hope is that by that point, the government will have made good on its promise and put measures in place to pay affected people 80% of their salaries up to £2500 ($2900). Since most of us won't be allowed to leave the house for the foreseeable future and therefore won't be spending nearly as much money, 80% of what someone would regularly get will hopefully be enough to get by.
