Westworld Renewed For Season 4 Despite Drop In Viewership

Even though Westworld has seen a significant drop in Live+Same Day viewership, the show will return for a fourth season.

TV might have never played a bigger and more important role in many of our lives than it is playing right now. Since most of us have no choice but to stay at home until told otherwise, we are watching TV like never before. Whether that be binging boxsets on Netflix, drinking in everything Disney+ has to offer, or keeping abreast of the global situation via the news.

In a little over a month, another streaming service will enter the fray in the form of HBO Max. HBO revealed exactly what it has to offer to an already crowded streaming scene yesterday via a trailer flaunting its movies and TV shows. Turns out, it's quite a lot, and a large part of that is due to the original content it has been creating for years.

Game of Thrones is at the top of that list, of course, but the reminder that Westworld will be on HBO Max was a welcome one too. The third season of the futuristic non-fiction show is airing right now, with just two episodes left to go. However, even though there is still more story left to be told this season, Variety reports that the show will be back for a fourth season.

That's despite Live+Same Day viewership of the show being way down compared to season two. 901,000 people watched season three's debut episode, a 57% drop when compared to the previous season's premiere. However, the bigger picture shows that more than nine million people watched it in total, hence HBO's willingness to see it return for a fourth season.

As for what that means for the Westworld storyline, and be warned as there are mild season three spoilers ahead, it would appear Dolores does not bring humanity crashing down on itself within the next two hours of television. Or perhaps she does and season four will be all about the next steps in her plan. This season has certainly been very different from the previous two, but fans of the show who have stuck with it are gradually being rewarded.
