Episodes 5 and 6 Of "The Last Dance" Average Over 5 Million Viewers

It's safe to say that ESPN's The Last Dance miniseries has met or surpassed expectations so far, depending on who you ask.

The series featured never-before-seen footage of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls' 1997-98 championship season. With MJ, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen and other core players bracing for a breakup, head coach Phil Jackson informed his team that the season would be their "last dance", hence the miniseries name.

Through the first four episodes, viewers got to see the brewing drama between Jackson, the players and and GM Jerry Krause plus the journeys to greatness for Jordan, Pippen and Rodman.

Episodes V and and VI were aired on Sunday night, once again netting giant viewership numbers.

According to NBA.com, the first six episodes of The Last Dance have averaged 5.8 million viewers. The fifth and sixth episodes averaged 5.5 million viewers between 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST time slot. Episode V averaged 5.8 million viewers in the 10 p.m. to 11 p.m time slot, while episode VI averaged 5.2 million.

The Last Dance was initially scheduled for a June release. But with no professional sports leagues on during the COVID-19 pandemic, ESPN decided to bump it up to an Apr. 19 premiere. The seventh and eighth episodes will premiere on May 10, with the final two episodes airing on May 17.

The 1998 NBA Finals saw the Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz in six games to claim their third straight NBA Championship, and their sixth in eight years. Jackson, as everyone expected, left the Bulls. Jordan retired (he returned to play for the Washington Wizards in 2000-01 for two seasons) and both Rodman and Pippen went on to new teams.

Here we are 22 years after the Bulls last championship season, and their impact on the game of basketball is still being heavily documented. Needless to say, they've given fans a lot to enjoy in a time with no sports on.
