"The Last Dance" Documentary Was Viewed In 23.8 Million Households Outside The U.S. On Netflix

The final two episodes of The Last Dance ESPN documentary aired on Sunday, and the series was a major success as far as ratings go.

The Last Dance was the most watched ESPN documentary ever, averaging 5.6 million viewers over the five-week run. Outside of the United States, the series was made available on Netflix.

Like ESPN, the streaming service giant unsurprisingly hit major numbers on The Last Dance as well. On Twitter, Netflix reported that the series was viewed in 23.8 million different households outside of the U.S. during the first four weeks.

As Netflix pointed out, the number of 23.8 million is rather fitting, since Michael Jordan wore No. 23 during his illustrious career.

The Last Dance was originally scheduled for a June 2020 release, but with all major sports in North America suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, ESPN decided to push up the release date. Episodes I and II aired on Apr. 19, with two more episodes airing on each of the next four Sundays.

The series chronicled the '90s Chicago Bulls dynasty - led by Jordan - that won six NBA championships between 1991 and '98. It detailed how the likes of Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr and head coach Phil Jackson emerged as key contributors on the dynasty, as well as the obstacles and family tragedies they went through.

ESPN's documentary also showed the drama and tension between general manager Jerry Krause, Jackson and the players. It featured footage that had never been released, having been locked in a vault for over 20 years. In 2016, Jordan agreed to do the documentary with Mike Tollin, and he gave the thumbs up for the footage to be used.

It's been 22 years since the Bulls dynasty ended, but the overall impact these guys had on the basketball landscape cannot be emphasized enough. The Last Dance was full of sky-high expectations, and it certainly lived up to the hype.
