DC Movies Will Not Be Leaving HBO Max On July 1 After All

HBO Max has backtracked and revealed that the bulk of its DC catalog will not be leaving the service on July 1 as was originally planned.

HBO waded into what is already a busy arena a little more than a month ago when it launched HBO Max. Considering the stranglehold Netflix has on the video streaming industry, and the back catalog Disney has to choose from for Disney+, it was a bold move from the company. However, on top of its own original content, it managed to land a handful of big names that should tempt in a lot of subscribers.

Perhaps the biggest fish of all HBO managed to net was DC. DC's extensive movie library was used prominently during HBO Max's ad campaign, and chances are the likes of Wonder Woman and Batman won them a lot of customers. However, shortly after launch, HBO revealed the DC movies its subscribers were busy enjoying would not be around for long.

When asked why some of DC's biggest movies would be leaving the platform after a little more than a month, HBO explained that they wouldn't be gone forever. That it, in fact, has other DC content not yet available and will rotate that in to replace some of the movies it will rotate out. The plan was for that to happen on July 1, and then again on August 1.

Well, it seems as if backlash to that odd idea was fierce enough that HBO has backtracked in a major way. Not only will the majority of the movies it planned to remove on July 1 be sticking around, but they will also officially be going nowhere until at least the end of 2020. Plus, the movies that were going to be rotated in on July 1 will still be added to the service.

It's not all good news. Although a lot of the DC movies on offer will now remain, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Catwoman, Jonah Hex, and The Losers don't appear to be sticking around. Come midnight on June 30, so today for those reading on the day this article was published, those movies will disappear from HBO Max indefinitely. For those reading this after June 30, you'll have to wait for the movies above to come back around, if they ever do.
